Flier Reported Killed After First Missing - 1944
Receiving a telegram on Friday morning, February 4, bearing the news
that her husband Flt. Sgt. Frederick George Green, was missing after air
operations, served only to pave the way for a more tragic wire received by Mrs. Green, of 75 Albinson St., Sudbury , a few hours later containing the words "Killed in Action"
Flt. Sgt. Green was born in Kagawong 31 years ago a son of Mr. and Mrs.
John Green. Educated on Manitoulin Island, he came to Sudbury seven years ago seeking employment. Fred obtained a job with the International Nickel Company at Frood, where he worked up until the time of his enlistment in July 1942, with the R.C.A.F. joining up for aircrew duties.
Receiving his training at St. Joli, Quebec, the airman graduated as a
wireless air gunner in April 1943, from that station. After a furlough he was transferred to Bahamas for overseas service, in May of the same year. Fred wrote his wife glowing accounts of the West Indies, describing all the different sights and days spent in the sunshine. He served on the islands for a period of six months and was then posted to England. It was only on Tuesday, February 1 that his wife received word from Fred to the effect that he has been stationed in Ireland, and found it a great change. "The only thing I regret", Fred wrote, "is that I never got home to see you and Baby Carol before I came over here. That is the sad thing about this dreadful war. You leave your loved ones so far behind you.: Flt. Sgt. Green's baby Carol is a year old this month and her daddy hasn't seen her since she was six weeks old.
In the letter to his wife he stated, "I will likely be in Ireland for
some time, and it doesn't seem as if I am ever going to get into the thick of things. Don't fret or worry about me."
Flt. Sgt. Green is survived by his wife, the former Theresa Valpel, of
Spring Valley, Saskatchewan, who is at present residing at 75 Albinson St., and his daughter, Carol, age one year. Also surviving are his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. John Green of Kagawong, one brother, Harold, and a sister Laura also of Kagawong - Sudbury Star.

WILLIAM AND MARY ANN GREENFIELD
Two perish in sinking of the Asia
There are many sad stories about tragedies on the water in the early days of the Manitoulin. The sinking of ships was not an everyday or every month occurrance but it was not uncommon either.
One of the worst was when the Asia sank while on its way to the Manitoulin, with great loss of life.
On this fateful trip a young couple who had just recently been married, were returning from their honeymoon and they were two who lost their lives in the sinking of the Asia.
William Greenfield and his wife Mary were returning to the Manitoulin aboard the Steamship Asia on September 14, 1882. This is a picture of them on their wedding day, proud and happy, little knowing that their new beginning was to all end in a matter of a few days.
The poem was written by William Greenfield's mother, Sarah (Curry) Greenfield to commemorate the loss of her dear son William and his new wife.
Lines
On the Death of William Greenfield, and wife, who were lost off the Steamer Asia, which foundered on the Georgian Bay, Sept.14th,1882.
We miss the darling William, and Wife,
From their familiar places,
We do not hear their footsteps near,
Nor see their cheerful faces.
We miss them at the table,
We feel their absence there
And of ! what sorrow pierce our hearts
To see their vacant chairs.
We miss them in the garden,
Where they did of't retreat,
To breathe the fragrance of the flowers
And rest their weary feet.
We miss their kind words spoken,
Their merry laughs and smiles;
We miss the fond looks of their eyes
We miss them all the while.
Our home is sad without them,
How desolate each heart
Ah, could we hear their voice again
What joy it would impart.
We miss them, oh! we miss them,
Which ever way we go
The stroke of death has snatched them hence
Has filled our hearts with woe.
Farewell dear William and Mary Ann.
Our souls were knit to thine
The memory of their kindness still
Around our hearts entwine.
Again we hope to meet them
When life's short journey's o'er
O yes, we hope to meet them,
On heaven's eternal shore.
RESPONSE
O mother dear hush every sigh,
Wipe all thy tears away,
For we have reached that world on high,
Where reigns eternal day.
Weve safely passed the bollow' roar
Upon life's stormy sea,
And here upon the shining shore
We're waiting now for thee.

DELIA GREENMAN
Passing of Mrs. T.B. Greenman
A death that has cast the community and surrounding country into deep
gloom occurred on Barrie Island on Tuesday morning, Jun 10th, when Mrs. T.B. Greenman passed away.
Mrs. Greenman had been ill only a few days. On Friday afternoon she walked to the church to a W.I. meeting, but shortly after returning home she complained of dizziness and fell. Mr. Greenman called for help and it was found she had taken a stroke but could talk to them. About four hours later, she took a second stroke which left her completely helpless and unconscious. Everything that could be done done (sic) for her was done but she never rallied and passed away at 2:30 Tuesday morning.
Much sympathy is felt for the husband and family. As Mrs. Greenman was a
devoted wife and loving mother. She was of a kindly disposition which won for her the deepest respect of all friends and neighbors. She was always ready to help anyone in need, and to give assistance in anything for the betterment of the community. Her passing away has left a gap which will be hard to fill.
Mrs. Greenman, who's maiden name was Delia Ann Morris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Morris of Battea, On, was in her 71st year. She was married to Mr. Geenman (sic) fifty-one years ago at Stayner, Ont., and 1880 they moved to the Manitoulin, settling on Barrie Island where they passed through pioneer days together. A few years ago they sold their farm and built for themselves a comfortable little home, on the farm, where they intended spending the eventide of their lives together and it was with a great shock to many of their friends that the tidings of Mrs. Greenman's illness and death were received. Mrs. Greenman leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, five daughters and five sons, namely, Robert, Ben, Earnest, Mrs. Chas. Lane and Mrs. Jos. Merrylees of Barrie Island: Mrs. Chas. Connors of Stevenville, Alta.; Mrs. Neil Montgomery of Golden Prairie, Sask.; Bert of Alliston; Mrs Harold Letts and Elmer of Islington, Ont.; also thirty-give grandchildren and one great grandchild. The funeral was from their residence on Wednesday afternoon, service being conducted by Rev. J.M. Walker.
Six of the grandsons were pallbearers, Arthur, Harold and Albert Lane and Tom, Wesley and Gordon Greenman. After the service at the house the remains were laid to rest in Gordon cemetery. A very large number of people turned out to pay respect to the departed.
The sympathy of the many friends of the deceased goes out to the stricken husband and family in their hour of trial.

Obituary - 1931 –
Thomas Baker Greenman
One of Barrie Island's oldest and most highly respected citizens, in the person of Thomas Baker Greenman, passed away on Sunday, January 11. Mr. Greenman had been in his usual good health up until the time of his death which occurred at the home of his son, Robert. Well known throughout Western Manitoulin, Mr. Greenman had a large circle of friends and he will be greatly missed as he was of a kind and genial disposition, always ready to do his share in all works for the betterment of the community in which he lived.
Thomas Baker Greenman was born near Chipenham, Wiltshire, England, in the year 1843. His father died while he was quite young; also his two little sisters. Shortly thereafter, when Mr. Greenman was about 7 years of age, his widowed mother with her four sons, sailed for Canada and located at Sterling, Ontario. Later they moved to Nottawa, near Collingwood, where the mother married Henry Adamson, merchant of that place. About the year 1869 Wm. Adamson sold out his business and bought a farm four miles from Collingwood. Here with the four children of the second family they lived for some years, when Mr. Adamson moved to Stayner. Mr. Greenman however continued on the farm until 1879 when with his wife (Delia Ann Morris) and their little family then moved to Barrie Island where other children were born to them.
Mr. Greenman leaves behind forty grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
One of his sons (Bert) lives near Alliston, Ontario, one daughter, Mrs. Harold Letts, near Beeton, Ontario, and one daughter, Mrs. Neil Montgomery, near Golden Prairie, Saskatchewan, while another daughter Mrs. Chas. Connors lives near Stevesville, Alberta. The other children Robert, Ben, Elmer, Mrs. Chas. Lane and Mrs. Jos. Merrylees have all settled on Barrie Island near the old homestead.
One striking feature of the Union of the Greenman and Adamson families was the strong affection Mr. Adamson had for the Greenman boys, and they for him. The same thing is true between the boys of each family and this strong affection has continued throughout the years.
The funeral of the late Mr. Greenman was held from the United Church, Barrie Island, on Tuesday, January 13th, the service being conducted by Rev. J.J. Matthias. Interment was made in Gordon Cemetery.

[CHRISTINE GRIFFITH]
Funeral of Mrs. Griffith
The funeral service of Mrs. J.W. Griffith, whose death in Rochester, Minn., on Monday, Sept. 19, was noted in the issue of the 16th, was held from the United Church, Gore Bay, last Friday, Sept. 17.
Mrs. Griffith was born in Staynor, Ont., July 25th, 1874 and was at the time of her death. 40 years, 1 month, 18 days old. Left to mourn her loss are the husband and two children Max and Jean, her father, three sisters and two brothers, indeed the whole community.
The funeral was one of the largest ever held in the District of Manitoulin, where Mrs. Griffith was so well known, highly respected and greatly beloved. Her’s was a quiet, modest, pious and godly life, the influence of which will be long felt and always remembered.
The almost tidal wave of sincere Christian sympathy which came forth to comfort and console the Omnet and Griffith families in their hour of sorrow is but another proof of the high esteem in which they were held by all who knew them.
If kind words or loving deeds could always mend broken hearts this world would be after all a happy place to live in, but if that cannot be, the promise remains sure and steadfast, “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.”
Mrs. Griffith was a mother in Israel, a member of the Presbyterian Church for twelve years before the united church, of which she was a charter member, came into existence.
A beautiful feature of the funeral procession was the escort of honour formed by the pupils of the Gore Bay Public and Continuation Schools, in which over 150 children took part as a token of respect and sympathy for Max and Jean.
Gore Bay Lodge, A.F. & A.M., No. 472 of which Mr. Griffith is Master, had the grave beautifully prepared to receive its precious contents. The transformation was a work of art and showed great ingenuity on the part of the committee who had it in charge. The church was also beautifully decorated. Unfortunately however only about half of those who attended the funerel (sic) were able to gain admission. The pall bearers were Messrs. Mathew, Robert and George Griffith, Wm. and Peter Omnet, and Wm. Hilliard.
The united sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family. In closing Rev. Mr. Morrison spoke these beautiful comforting words:
When our eyes behold the City and its many mansions bright,
And the river calm and restful flowing free,
When the friends that death have parted all in bliss unite again
What gathering and an Easter that will be.
Soft and save to thee Dear Mother be thy earthly bed, fragrant be the flowers that there shall bloom. May the year’s earliest buds unfold their wondrous beauties on thy resting place, and may each aspiring time renew their loveliness and there too may the sweetness of the summer’s last rose linger longest. With a strong and steadfast faith in our Heavenly Father we know that we shall meet again in Realms beyond. Until then, dear sister, farewell, sleep on and take they rest. We loved thee well, but Jesus loved thee best. Good night, good night.
