DAISY JEAN HARFIELD

Obituary
In loving memory of Daisy Jean Harfield who entered through Heaven’s Gates June 25, 2000. Jean was the fourth child of Harry and Loudella (Nevills) Cooper, a great granddaughter of Humphrey May. She was raised and educated in Carnarvon Township. When Jean completed her education in Mindemoya she worked at several jobs on the Island and in Sudbury. Eventually she relocated to Toronto to further her studies. She graduated from Marvel Hairdressing School in Toronto in 1946. It was during this time that Jean met and later married Bernard L. Harfield. After living in Hamilton for a year Jean and Bernie moved to Manitowaning and established a car dealership and garage. Jean continued to hairdress. They lived in Manitowaning from 1947-1951. When life dealt Jean with some hardships in Manitowaning, Jean lived with her brother Max for a short period. Jean moved to Mindemoya in 1953, where she bought a home and raised five children: Lena May (predeceased 1949) Leonard, Gloria, Keith, Marnie and Ann. She was a very dear mother to her children. She was able to continue motherhood and her hairdressing business amazingly well. When her youngest child was preparing to leave home for university Jean also went back to school and received a certificate in Home Care Nursing. This career became useful for her volunteer work but she continued on in her hairdressing business until the age of 73. She volunteered in her labours of love and devotion to people who were sick, lonely or just needed a friend, until the day we lost her.
As active as she was, she was still able to love and cherish her 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The sparkle in her eye, her warm smile and her quick wit made her a very special grandmother to all her grandchildren. Jean and her children attended the Mindemoya Missionary Church which inspired her faith to grow through many trials in her life. Her home was always open and a cup of tea or her homemade chicken soup was graciously offered. She opened her home to visiting Canadian Bible Society representatives, child evangelists, missionaries and many family and friends.
Jean volunteered at the Mindemoya Hospital by visiting and feeding patients. She wrote recipes in the local paper in exchange for a donation to the Mindemoya Hospital Auxiliary. She also canvassed and donated for the auxiliary. Jean and her good friend Marjorie Young put on an annual turkey/ham feast for the residents at Manitoulin District Association for Community Living. She was a Sunday School teacher for the Youth Group for 25 years, as well as serving as clerk-treasurer and helping with the church auxiliary. She also canvassed for many other charitable organizations.
Jean’s thoughtfulness included many cards and notes to those who were hurting. Her optimism and jovial personality was an inspiration to many.
Her faith continued to grow through her five-month battle with cancer. She continually inspired doctors, nurses and visitors, and her love and patience to her family and friends throughout her illness was incredible. Her family sadly bid her farewell for now.
The overwhelming generosity of donations in her memory have been distributed within her favourite town--Mindemoya. Jean’s children express their heartfelt gratitude to the many who were there for their dear mother and also to all of their family, friends and church family for the many generous acts of sympathy.

JEAN TOVELL HASTINGS

Jean Tovell Hastings, lifelong Manitoulin summer resident, died of cancer in Libertyville, Illinois, on September 12, 2007 at age 68. She first came to Manitoulin from Toronto as a two-year-old when her parents, Bill and Orpha Tovell, began building their summer retreat at Perivale on Lake Kagawong, and has never missed a summer. When the Hastings family from southern Indiana became seasonal neighbours in the 1950s, Bill and Jean began a friendship that led to their marriage in 1961. Their daughter Nicole and her husband Ken King travel from Kansas City to holiday with the family, which includes Jim and Mary Hastings from Alexandria, Virginia and Jean’s cousins Terry and Judy Duncan, who live at Perivale year-round. Other cousins live in Garson, Ottawa, Barrie and Toronto. With a B.A. in French from the University of Toronto, newly married Mrs. Hastings began teaching high school French in Indiana and continued after the couple’s move to Illinois. After earning a Master of Liberal Studies degree from Lake Forest College, Jean taught both French and Humanities at the College of Lake County. She was active in the American Association of University Women, holding several state offices, and was a frequent lecturer on art, architecture, women’s history and - most recently - lighthouses. A visit to the Mississagi Strait lighthouse in 1972 sparked Jean’s interest in these historic beacons. The Hastings have visited and photographed most of the lighthouses on Lakes Huron, Michigan and Superior. Jean’s book, Lighthouses of Manitoulin and Surrounding Islands, a collaborative venture with keepers’ families, local photographers and student artists, was her gift to Manitoulin in gratitude for 66 joyful summers. A memorial service will be held in Libertyville. Memorial gifts towards the reconstruction of the Providence Bay lighthouse can be sent to the Township of Central Manitoulin, P.O. Box 187, 6020 Highway 542, Mindemoya, Ontario, P0P 1S0.

OBITUARY
JEAN HASTINGS RADIATED ENTHUSIASM AND ERUDITION AMONG ISLAND COMMUNITY
MANITOULIN -- The light of her life may have been extinguished, but her passionate interest in Manitoulin’s people, plants and, especially, beacons, will shine forth for many years to come.
Jean Hastings, a long-time summer resident and lighthouse authority, passed away in her home community of Liberty, Illinois on September 12, at the age of 68.
For those who got to know her - and many did, either through her series of presentations on local lighthouses, or her presence at various Island events - it will probably come as a shock to learn that she had been battling a serious illness for the past few years. Anytime you encountered her, she seemed a dynamo of ebullience and energy.
Or should we say: esprit. As a former teacher of the French language, we think Jean would approve of the word choice. A native of Toronto, Ms. Hastings (nee Tovell) earned a BA in French from the University of Toronto, and later taught the language at both the high school and college levels in the US.
Her connection to Manitoulin was forged much earlier, while just a toddler. As widower, Bill Hastings notes, “she was two years old when she first came here. Her father built the camp (on Lake Kagawong) in 1941, so she spent 66 summers here on the Island.”
The bereaved husband, who returned to Manitoulin last week, can date his connection to the Island back nearly as far. His family acquired their own cottage, one lot over from the one belonging to Jean’s family, in the 1950s. And that’s how the two met. The friendship forged at Lake Kagawong culminated in their marriage in 1961.
While Mr. Hastings’ family hailed from Indiana, he and Jean would make their home in Illinois, where they spent the past 40 years. But they would venture to Manitoulin each summer, in recent years staying on well into the fall.
Unfortunately, a recurrence of Jean’s cancer this past summer meant that the two had to return to the US earlier than planned. They’d arrived this spring in time to promote Ms. Hastings’ book, ‘Lighthouses of Manitoulin and the Surrounding Islands,’ at the trade fair in Little Current, and the author was excited about an invitation to be a featured writer at the Manitoulin Reading Festival in August.
“She was very disappointed she couldn’t make the reading festival,” notes Debbie Robinson, Assiginack’s librarian and one of the organizers of the literary event. “She was a great supporter of the festival over the last four to five years, and really supportive of libraries and literacy, and especially history.” But while the author couldn’t be there to read from her work, she could at least feel proud in the knowledge that the book had found a ready audience. Bill Caesar, who initiated the series of booklets on Manitoulin marine lore and natural features, said that Ms. Hasting’s contribution has been wildly popular. “They’re gone,” he said, of the initial print run of 1,000. A second printing is now being planned, and Mr. Caesar said that he’d like to honour the late author through a photograph and dedication that will grace future copies.
The White’s Point resident met Ms. Hastings a couple of years ago, when the lighthouse lover approached him for a ride to the Strawberry tower. He was so impressed by her passion for, and knowledge of, the area’s beacons that he suggested she write the lighthouse book he had envisioned for the heritage series.
Ms. Hastings readily agreed, and it became the focus of the last year of her life. “She was a believer, and very fanatical about the book,” said Mr. Caesar. “I never knew she was sick.”
While the book involved countless hours of research, writing and design considerations, Ms. Hastings clearly found it a welcome challenge. In talking with Jim Hastings, her brother-in-law, Mr. Caesar said he got a glimpse into how rewarding the project was for the author. As the brother-in-law put it, “How many people can say that the last year of their life was their best?”
Ms. Robinson believes the information that Ms. Hastings compiled, in such a concise and engaging format, serves as a wonderful legacy. “She put an enormous amount of work into the book, and it’s a huge chunk of history that people can easily absorb.”
On a personal level, the librarian remains in awe of Ms. Hastings’ bounteous spirit. “She was a truly nice lady and wonderful woman, who was always up for whatever challenge. She was uniquely spontaneous and full of enthusiasm. If everyone had a quarter of her energy, we’d be a lot better off.”
Lighthouses weren’t Ms. Hastings only passion. Husband Bill notes that she volunteered at Misery Bay Provincial Park, and was particularly enamoured of wildflowers, examples of which she shared with the public through a slide show presentation. She made many friends on Manitoulin - among them Fern Patterson, who provided a touching written tribute that Jean was able to read before she died - and enjoyed learning about many facets of Island culture and lore.
But the area’s historic light towers were certainly a major focus in recent years. A visit to the Mississagi Lighthouse in 1972 is credited with sparking Ms. Hastings’ interest in the navigational beacons, and over the decades since that awakening she compiled a trove of information about the structures and the families who stayed there.
She also became involved with a committee that is endeavouring to recreate the vanished Providence Bay lighthouse, and in the last year of her life had input into a decision on where the replica should be built. It’s unfortunate she won’t be present to see the full-scale model take shape, but at least she died confident that plans were in full swing to realize the dream. Memorial gifts, at Jean’s own suggestion, should be put towards the Providence Bay Lighthouse project, with contributions accepted via the Township of Central Manitoulin, at Box 187, 6020 Highway 542, Mindemoya, Ont., P0P 1S0.
Relatives of Ms. Hastings will continue to have a presence on Manitoulin. Daughter Nicole and husband Ken King are regular visitors, as are Jim and Mary Hastings, while Jean’s cousins Terry and Judy Duncan, live year-round at Perivale.
And while Ms. Hastings sadly won’t be able to return for what would have been her 67th consecutive summer on Manitoulin, the late author is likely to make an appearance in another form. Saddened that she couldn’t attend the Manitoulin Reading Festival, Ms. Hastings arranged to have a video made of herself discussing the Island’s lighthouses.
That resource will now be donated to the Assiginack Library, where it will be available as a visual complement to her book - a labour of love that she considered her gift to the Island community that provided her with 66 joyful summers.
