[ELLEN HEMBRUFF]

Death of Mrs. John Hembruff
On Friday January 16th, 1914, there passed peacefully away, after a long and painful illness, Mrs. John Hembruff, at her home at Bidwell. Mrs. Hembruff was in her 75th year, and came to the Island with her husband about 40 years ago, they being one of the first families to settle in Bidwell.
She had been ill for several months and her illness was of such a painful nature, as to necessitate constant attention by the members of friends of the family. In spite of this fact, her end came very peacefully indeed.
Mrs. Hembruff was much revered by all who knew her. She was always of a cheerful and kindly disposition, and gained her love and respect of all by her willingness to help, comfort and counsel all who came to her at any time. That she will be greatly missed was evidenced by the large attendance at the funeral service, which was held in the Methodist Church, Bidwell, (of which she was one of the oldest members), on Sunday Jan. 18th, Mr. Smith, Sheguiandah, conducting the service. She is survived by her husband, seven sons, and two daughters to whom the sympathies of the entire community are extended in their great bereavement.

Death of John Hembruff

Mr. John Hembruff, the oldest resident of Bidwell, passed away at his home on Tuesday, February 9th. The deceased gentleman was eighty three years of age, and since the death of his wife in January of last year, has been in very failing health but in spite of this fact, his death was somewhat unexpected. He had partaken of a lunch before retiring, and shortly afterwards was taken ill, death taking place almost immediately. He had been on the Island for over forty years, and was highly respected by all who knew him. He is survived by seven sons and two daughters, and the sympathy of the community was evidenced by the large attendance at the funeral service, which was held in the Bidwell Methodist Church, on February 11th.

ILSE HESS
In loving memory of Ilse Hess, who passed away after a short illness, at the Mindemoya Hospital on Sunday, Dec 2, 2007. Born on November 6, 1927 at Wuppertal, Germany, to Willi and Marta Grineisen. From an early age Mom had an independent and determined spirit. She survived WWII, and numerous bombing raids, with her mother and younger siblings. Later in the earlier 1950s, when Canada was advertising for emigrants from Europe, Mom read an Ad on the side of a bus "Come to Canada" and despite the protests from her family, she took the journey to Canada. She became a mother and a homemaker in suburban Toronto, and started to live the Canadian dream. Early in 1970 and a difficult period within our family, her tenacity carried her through job retraining, and the practical difficulties of keeping the family home and seeing her two children through school. Mom was able to retire early, traveling extensively, visiting all North America's 10 provinces and 50 states as well as many countries throughout Europe. She was always full of energy, spending her retirement years in Arizona, golfing, dancing and doing various crafts. Only in her later years did she slow down due to many health challenges. Even then her love of life, and strong will impressed us all. Loving mother of son Roy Hess and wife Jane, grandchildren Tabitha and Kevin, of New Brunswick. Daughter Ingrid Blay and husband Trevor, Manitoulin Island, Ontario. Sister, Marta Muller and husband Erich (deceased) of Germany. Brother Willi Grineisen and Renate of Germany. Sister Ingrid Heimann and husband Klaus of Germany. Will be sadly missed by nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Funeral Services are limited to family only. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Parkinson Society of Canada are appreciated.

LEAH STEWART HETHERINGTON
Leah Stewart Hetherington passed away peacefully in her Shoreline, WA home on October 2, 2009 at age 91 after a life well lived. She was born in Halbrite, Saskatchewan to George and Helen Johnson Stewart and moved to Fargo, ND with her family at the age of eight. Leah was an athletic child and loved to ice skate on the frozen Red River and on a pond her dad made in the back yard. She taught swimming lessons and served as a lifeguard at the local pool. After graduating from Moorhead State Teacher's College, Leah became a physical education teacher at Owatonna State School in Minnesota, an orphanage and school for grades 1 - 12. While there, she persuaded the superintendent to allow the girls to have a cheerleading squad for the basketball team, then helped the girls design and sew their uniforms. Thus began a lifetime of active involvement in kids' activities: Girl Scout troop leader, ski bus chaperone and constant chauffer for her four children to scout and school activities. Leah and Richard were married in 1944 in Tennessee, where Richard was serving in the U.S. Army. As a career military family, they lived at bases in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia and New Jersey, as well as overseas in Rome, Italy and Garmisch, Germany. Son Richard, Jr. was born in North Carolina, George and Elizabeth in Germany and Pamela in Georgia. Leah and the children moved to Seattle while Richard served in Korea and the family made Seattle their home after he retired. In their later years, Richard and Leah spent summers at their beloved cabin on the shores of Lake Windfall on Manitoulin Island, Ontario and developed cherished friendships there. She was a lifelong active member of Presbyterian and Anglican churches, most recently of St. Barnabas in Shoreline and St. Francis of Assisi in Mindemoya, Ontario. Leah's greatest joy was spending time with her family and she was dearly beloved by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There was always room for one more at her table. Christmas Eve family celebrations, with cookies galore, were legendary and created lifetime memories for all who attended. Leah will be remembered as a spectacular mom and grandma; a dear friend and good neighbor with a tender heart and a gregarious soul; a lover of plants, birds and animals; a person who was generous with her time and talents and approached life with energy, enthusiasm and optimism. She will be deeply missed by her children, who adored her: Dick Hetherington and wife Ann of Lake Forest Park, WA; George Hetherington of Shoreline, WA; Elizabeth Sage of Mililani, HI; and Pamela Bryan and husband Don of Yucca Valley, CA., along with 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard in 2008, and by her brothers Lyle and Walter Stewart and her sisters Lois Stewart (who died in the flu epidemic of 1918 at age 5) and Eleanor Jacobson. A service to celebrate her life took place on October 10 at St. Barnabas Anglican Church. Memorial donations may be sent to St. Barnabas (2340 N. 155 Street, Shoreline, WA 98133) for their stained glass memorial fund.

During his military career, he was also stationed in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia and New Jersey in the USA and in Rome, Italy; Garmisch, Germany; and Korea. While serving in Korea, he assisted in writing the Armistice Agreement. He retired from the Army as a Major after 20 years of service and returned to his home in Seattle. He also worked for and retired from the US Postal Service. Richard loved the outdoors and, even in his 80's, could hike faster and farther than people half his age. He and Leah immersed themselves in nature at their beloved cabin on the shores of Lake Windfall on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, where they spent their summers for many years. His love of God, family and country were apparent to all who knew him. He was an active member of several Anglican churches, most recently of St. Barnabas in Shoreline and St. Francis of Assisi in Mindemoya, Ontario. JUDGE C.E. HEWSON PASSES AT BARRIE
After a lengthy illness, Judge Hewson died on Tuesday, May 11, 1937, at his home on Theresa St., Barrie, in his 81st year. Two years ago he fell and fractured a hip and never recovered from the effects of this injury.
Charles Edward Hewson was a native of Innisfil, a son of Wm. Hutchinson Hewson and Abigail Cummings, and was born on the homestead on the northwest corner of the 13th concession and the Penetang Road, at Painswick. He came of Irish pioneer stock, his grandfather, Francis D. Hewson, having come to Canada from Tralee, Ireland, to be Secretary to the Duke of Richmond, who was appointed to be Governor, but never reached Canada, having been fatally bitten by a mad fox before it was time to sail. Mr. Hewson, however, was provided for by a grant of 500 acres of Crown land near Big Bay Point. An aunt of Judge Hewson is said to have been the first white woman born in this country. After graduating from Barrie high school, C.E. Hewson studied law in the offices of the late Mr. Justice William Lount. Barrie and then attended Osgoode Hall. Completing his course there in 1881, he became a member of the legal firm of Lount, Hewson and Creswicke, Barried, which later became Hewson and Creswicke. In 1902 he was made a King’s Counsellor and in 1908 was appointed Judge of the District of Manitoulin, with residence at Gore Bay. During the years 1923-1930 the late Judge Hewson acted in the dual capacity of Judge of the District of Manitoulin and Judge of the District of Sudbury. During 1921 and 1922 he was appointed by the Government and acted in conjunction with other Judges of the County of York in Toronto.
Keenly interested in politics he did effective work for the Liberal party of the platform and in other ways. In 1902 he unsuccessfully contested Centre Simcoe against A.B. Thompson.
Judge Hewson was a member of the Anglican Church and for several years was a Warden of Trinity Church, Barrie. He was a member of Kerr Lodge, A.F. and A.M. and also of the I.O.F. and the Royal Arcanum.
Always interested in municipal affairs, he served in the County Council, when it was composed of 18 commissioners, from 1897 to 1900 inclusive. He was mainly instrumental in starting the Investigation which disclosed the defalcations of S.J. Sanford, County Treasurer, who escaped punishment only through getting out of the country. In June 1900, he resigned from the County Council when his firm was appointed County solicitors, continuing in that capacity until he was appointed to the Bench.
On his retirement, Judge Hewson and his family took up residence in Barrie in October, 1931.
Surviving him are his widow, formerly Julia Creswicke, daughter of the late Henry Creswicke, P.L.S. and C.E. Richard Hewson of Kirkland Lake and seven daughters: the Misses Theo and Mildred of Barrie; Mrs. Donald Kydd of Fredericton, N.B.; Mrs. D. McGibbon of Midland; and Mrs. Cyril Knight, Mrs. Stephen Bourne and Mrs. Stewart Webster of Toronto. Victor, serving with the Air Force, was killed in the Great War. Harry met in the same way that his cousin the late Hal. Creswicke, was killed falling under the wheels of a train.
The funeral was held on Friday, at 2:30 p.m. to Trinity Church and Barrie Union Cemetery. Services were conducted by Ven Archdeacon C.A. Moulton, assisted by Rev. J.E. Ward of St. Stephen’s Church, Toronto, and Rev. W.T. Swainson of Rosseau, formerly rector at Gore Bay.
The honorary pallbearers were: Judge Emerson Coatsworth, Toronto; Ashford Warnica and Sam Blackmore, Painswick; W.H. Hurst, Alliston; H.C. Fortier, C.E. O’Reilly, Toronto; Judge Wismer, D.F. McCuaig, M.P., J.T. Simpson, D.H. MacLaren, A.G. Ardagh and H.A. Sims, Barrie.
Five nephews and one grandson were the active pallbearers, viz., George Hewson, Stroud; Jack and Keith Hewson, Toronto; Wm. and Conrad Hewson, Penetang, and Hewson Knight, Toronto.
Members of the Simcoe County Bar attended in a body.

Harry Hewson Killed by Train
Son of Judge Hewson Meets Sad End
Judge Hewson received a wire on Tuesday morning stating that his son Harry had been seriously injured. He immediately left on the mail boat to catch the train at cutler. Shortly after his departure another telegram arrived stating that, while attempting to board a train at Locust Hill, near Toronto, Harry had missed his hold and fell under the train, both his legs were cut off and he expired before he could be taken to a hospital.
Much sympathy is felt for the Judge and his family in their sad bereavement. Mrs. Hewson is still at Barrie where she went some time ago to attend the funeral of her brother. The other sons, Victor and Dick and Miss Naomi, left yesterday morning for Barrie where interment will take place.

Killed While Boarding Train
Harry Hewson was Returning to Toronto, after spending Holiday at Markham We copy the following from the Barrie Examiner, which give further details of the sad death of Harry Hewson. The sad bereavement comes to the Judge and Mrs. Hewson’s almost immediately following the death of Mrs. Hewson’s brother, the late Mr. A. E. H. Creswicke, K.C.
Henry Creswicke Hewson, eldest son of Judge Hewson, of Gore Bay, and formerly of Barrie, was fatally injured while attempting to board the Ottawa C. P. R. train arriving at Locust Hill, eighteen miles northeast of Toronto at 6 o’clock Tuesday morning. He succumbed to his injuries while on the way to the General Hospital in Toronto.
News of the sad fatality was telegraphed to his mother here on Tuesday morning, but no particulars were available till later.
He had spent the holiday at the home of Mr. Reesor, at Markham, and had engaged a livery to take him to the station at Locust Hill the net morning. The livery did not appear and he had to look up another one. This kept him late, and he just arrived at the Locust Hill station as the train was pulling out. He threw his bag on, but in attempting to catch the railing of the car, he fell under the wheels, and before the train could be stopped both legs were both cut off below the knees. Drs. McDonald of Markham and Freel of Stouffville were summoned, and the injured man was rushed to Toronto and met at the station b the chief C.P.R. surgeon, Dr. Beattie, and the police ambulance. He never lost consciousness, but before the ambulance reached the General Hospital, he died from the loss of blood and shock.
The late Harry Creswicke Hewson was born at “Inchiquin,” Barrie, 27 years ago, and attended public school and Collegiate here. When his father was appointed Judge at Gore Bay, he remained with his aunt, Miss Creswicke for some time after the family had left. He was on the office staff of the Harris Abattoir Co. and lived in Toronto with his uncle, Mr. C. E. O’Reilly on Wells St. It is rather a strange coincidence that his uncle, Mr. Henry Creswicke, after whom he was named, also was killed, some years in a railway accident.
This is the first break in Judge and Mrs. Hewson’s family of ten children, the surviving members being: Miss Theo in Winnipeg; Mrs. Kidd (Edith) in Saskatoon; Mrs. Knight (Grace) in Toronto; Mrs. McGibbon (Beatrice) in Penetang, and two girls at home, also Victor, Dick and Naomi, who were at Miss Creswicke’s with their mother when the word came.
The funeral was held this afternoon, on the arrival of the Toronto noon train, service being held at Trinity Church by Rev. E. R. J. Biggs. The pallbearers were: Terence and Wm. O’Reilly of Toronto; Geo. Hewson of Stroud; Wm. Hewson, Penetang; and J. Hewson, Toronto.
