[JEAN HOLDEN]

Obituary
Upon hearing of the death of Mrs. Holden, which occurred in Toronto on Tuesday, Jan. 18th, inst., the town of Gore Bay was cast in deep gloom. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Purvis, sr., and beloved wife of W. W. Holden, Provincial Fish Inspector. Until three or four years ago Mr. and Mrs. Holden lived in Gore Bay, but upon Mr. Holden receiving his appointment from the Government of Ontario, they moved to Toronto, residing at 105 Geoffrey St. She was attacked with the deadly disease, cancer of the liver, last summer, and all medical skill was unavailing in the Hospital at Toronto. She was removed to her home on Geoffrey st. a short time ago and friends were notified that her recovery was impossible and she expired on Jan 18th. The remains were brought to Gore Bay for burial, interment taking place in Gordon cemetery on Jan. 20th. She leaves a husband, father and mother to mourn her loss, also the following brothers and sisters: John, Alex, James of Gore Bay, William of Selkirk, Man., and Ed. Of Michigan City, Indiana, Mrs. Penton of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. S.P. Jackson of Vancouver, B.C. and Mrs. Bond of Chicago. She left no children. Mr. Holden, who was a devoted and homeloving husband and was apparantly (sic) inconsolable over his bereavement and reminds up of the old quotation, ”There are no tears shed like those of a strong man,” but time, the great healer, will bring its balm and lessen the sting of death, but the departed lady will long remain in our memories, holding as she did, the highest esteem of all who knew her.
The service at the house was conducted by Rev. J. J. Ferguson of the Presbyterian church and Rev. A.E. Owen of the Methodist church, Mr. Ferguson preaching a sermon from Rev. 12, 13, “Blessed are they that do His commandments that they may have right unto the tree of life and may enter in through the gates into the city.” He said in part, “It is said that the old men in the days of Ezra who had seen the temple of Solomon wept when they thought how inferior the one now being erected was going to be. But there will be no disappointment in the city of God where there will be perfect service, perfect knowledge and perfect likeness. It is only by keeping God’s commandments that happiness can be secured even in this world. If one hates his brother his peace of mind is gone. An atmosphere of lies must be fraught with curses. Were all covetous it would be misery indeed to feel that we were envied everything that we have. In the New Testament we are given one supreme command that will bring the highest blessedness. “This is his commandment that ye believe on the name of His Son, Jesus Christ.” But there is only a beginning of blessedness here “that they may have right to the tree of life,” After Adam’s expulsion from the garden of Eden we read of cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to keep the way of the tree of life. If we only think of how much alarm and misery death is the cause of in this world we can understand the happiness of a better world where all may eat of the tree of life, “and may enter in through the gates into the city.” It is not an admission by stealth while the sentinel sleeps it is not through some neglected breach or secret passage but openly and before all. It is vital for us that we should have this entrance even if we should be saved “yet so as by fire” as though a man had barely escaped with his life having lost all his property and goods. But it is our privilege to add to our faith virtue, knowledge, temperance and charity that so an entrance may be ministered unto us abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.”
The Recorder condoles with the bereaved husband and relatives in their day of sorrow.

William Howard dies on Highway
LITTLE CURRENT – William George Howard, 35, of Honora was found dead on February 25 just before midnight on Highway 68 about nine and a half miles south of here at Ten Mile Point. He was killed after being hit by a car driven by Kenny Joseph Pangowish of Wikwimikong. Sargent Andrews of the Little Current Ontario Provincial Police told the Expositor.
According to Sgt. Andrews, Mr. Howard was lying on the highway when the car ran over him.
The driver and his four passengers were questioned by the police, but no charges were laid. “It appears to have been an unfortunate accident, and there is no evidence to indicate otherwise”, said Sgt. Andrews.
However, police are still unsure of how Mr. Howard ended up lying on the road, stated Sgt. Andrews.
The dead man had been a passenger in a car when he left his brother’s house in Manitowaning.
An autopsy on the body was performed in Sudbury and it will be the decision of the coroner whether an inquest will be held.
