"Grandma loved to be in on everything,
In the livingroom she was the hub,
Family came through
Friends visited
Television blared
Quiet, her story is on!
She could watch the seasons changing
She watched the many changes in nature
This year Grandma enjoyed watching the deer
Her memory was infallible
Stories about us all--some good, some bad
In recent years, her hearing failed
But not her mind
She helped me with our family tree
Grandma knew if a date was wrong
Or a spelling too
She edited everything I had for her part of the tree
She read every word I have
She always was encouraging
Grandma would expect us to go on
That is the way she has always been
In her honour,
We must do as she would expect
We do not know what tomorrow will bring
Grieve for a beautiful lady
Who lived a very full life
We must live our lives to the fullest every day--for her
--By Marilyn Irish (granddaughter)

Obituary
We have this week to chronicle the sudden death of Mr. Lloyd Liscombe which occurred at his home at Sandfield on the morning of the first of ???? where he was born twenty-one summers ago. Last winter Lloyd had a very severe attack of the Flu which developed into that dreaded disease tubercolosus (sic) and while we knew the end was drawing near we did not expect it so soon. His death came as a great shock to the community where he was well and favorably known. Eight years ago his father died, leaving Lloyd with the responsibility of the home, a position he ably filled for one so young. His death is deeply regretted by his many friends.
A large crowd attended the funeral which was conducted by Mr. Looker of Rockville. The Hymns chosen for the occasion were, “What a friend we have in Jesus,” “Jesus Lover of My Soul” and “Abide With Me” Mr. Looker spoke from 1st Cor. And Rev 20: dwelling much on the blessings of the firs Resurrection.
The pallbearers were Messrs. Clarence Martin, Earl Martin, Lawrence Tann, Karl Johnston, Percy Brown and Ernest Moody. Mrs. Liscombe and family have our heart felt sympathy in their sad bereavement as it will be remembered little Flora was laid to rest less than a year ago.
Seems hard to lay our lovely child deep in the damp cold earth, but hope through Christ Eternal Joy again to meet our darling boy.

Pleasant in manner, patient in pain,
Our loss is his eternal gain,
His cheery ways and smiling face,
Are pleasures to recall.
He had a pleasant word for each,
And died beloved by all.
But Hark! A voice is heard through sorrow's gloom,
Death is the door to life and endless bloom,
Not as a foe He takes our dear ones away,
But so that they may bloom in endless day.

HANNAH LITTLE (nee GALLAUGHER) (b. Jan 6, 1832; d. Jun 23, 1910)
Hannah Little, mother of William and Robert Little, of this city, died at Duluth on Thursday of last week, where she had gone a week previous to spend a week or two visiting with an old friend. She had attained a ripe old age, and her advanced years found her suffering with some of the ailments which naturally comes to the aged. On the day previous to her death, however, she had felt about as usual and undertook to walk downtown. She made the return trip of several blocks and when she reached the home of her friend, she had become so overcome with the heat that her condition seemed very serious. Medical aid was summoned and she was later taken to the hospital, where she gradually sank and the following morning at 4 o'clock, she passed away. The deceased was the widow of James Little, who will be remembered by many of the old citizens of Iron River. he preceded his good wife to the home beyond the grave many years ago. The funeral was held from the Congregational Church last Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and all that was mortal of the deceased was laid at rest in the City Cemetery. Rev. Day preached the funeral sermon and officiated at the burial service at the grave. Mrs. Little was born in the County of Simcoe, Canada, Jan. 6, 1832. Her father was one of the early settlers of that section coming to the New World from the County of Tyine (Tyrone), Ireland. She married James Little Mar. 22, 1854 and came to Iron River, Wisconsin in 1893. They lived here 8 years when they moved to Hannah, N. Dakota, where after 14 months, her husband died. From that time until last Oct., Mrs. Little made her home in North Dakota when she returned to Iron River and since which time she has made her home with her son, Robert. Last March she had a severe attack and for a short time it was feared that she could not live, but good care brought her safe through again. She had been the mother of 13 children of whom four sons and six daughters survive her. Three children lie buried side by side in the home grave yard in Canada.

HUGH LITTLE Tehkummah, June 30, 1931-(Special)
One of the early pioneers of Tehkummah township, in the person of Hugh Little, passed away on Friday, Jun 19, and was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery at Hilly Grove. The funeral service at the house was conducted by Rev. Mr. Atkinson, of Mindemoya, who gave an address full of hope and comfort for the bereaved ones. The funeral cortege from the house to the cemetery was conducted by the local Loyal Orange Lodge, No. 2655, assisted by brethren from Little Current, Sheguindah, Bass Creek, Manitowaning and Providence Bay lodges, and directed by Wor. Bro. Rev. Gosse, of North Bay, grand organizer for Ontario West.
The pallbearers were Bro. Luke Vanlora, P.M., Bro. John J. McMurray, P.M., Bro., J. R. Wilson, P.M., Bro. Gladys Noble, D.M., Bro. Robt. Russell and Bro W. McDonald. The beautiful floral tributes showed the high esteem in which deceased had been held. The coffin was draped with the banner of the local L.O.L., which he had loved and supported so long. The place he held in the hearts of the people was indicated by the large numbers who came to sympathize with the bereaved family, and to pay their last respects to the dead; the largest concourse that has ever entered the gates of that beautiful old cemetery. Among those from a distance were Sheriff Fell, of Gore Bay and George and Herb Walford and friends from Walford Station. The late Hugh Little was born in Mansfield, Wulmer (s/b Mulmur) Township, in the county of Dufferin, on August 25, 1859. He came with his father to the Manitoulin about 53 or 54 years ago. On Christmas Day, in 1882, he married Mary Ann Hauer (s/b Haner), of Manitowaning and settled on a farm in Tehkummah, where he resided until the time of his death.
Always public spirited, he had taken an active interest in everything that was for the advancement of the people among whom he dwelt, and was ever first to be present in the time of trouble to render such aid as he could. For over 26 years he served this township on the council board. His home was opened in kind-hearted hospitality to everyone, and being of an optimistic nature he had a word of cheer for all. He was a charter member of L.O.L. No. 2655, and held the rank of P.D.M. He was also a member of Kagawong Scarlet Chapter. Besides his widow he is survived by two brothers, one sister, five sons and two daughters. The brothers are Joe Little, of Granite Falls, Washington, and Robt. Little, in Wisconsin. JOHN LITTLE (b. 1856; d. Sep 14, 1882)
s/o James Little and Hannah Gallaugher
The sentiments expressed by the following lines were suggested to the author while viewing the dead body of the late Mr. John Little, son of James and Hannah Little, late of the Township of Mulmur, now of the Manitoulin Island. Mr. Little was a strong, stalwart, well proportioned young man of 25 years, height 6 ft. 4 in., weight over 200 lbs. He had been over harvesting with his uncle (Mr. Edward Little,) in Mulmur, and, on his way home took passage on the steamship "ASIA" at the port of Owen Sound, on the 13th of September, 1882 and as is well known, that ill-fated vessel, on the following day, and during the terrific gale of Thursday, the 14th, sank in the waters of the Georgian Bay, when all hands on board perished, excepting two, who but narrowly escaped with their lives to tell the sad tale. Mr. Little was one of the five who perished on the life-boat about midnight, or twelve hours after the ship went down.

When I embark.
For though from out our bourne of time and place,

The late William Little was the son of the late Hugh Little and Mary Ann (Haner) Little of Tehkummah, and had lived in that township all his life. He was born on February 28, 1885. The services were conducted by the Rev. John Renshaw of the home church and Mr. C. A. K. Cockburn of Gore Bay. Both ministers were special friends of the deceased and spoke appropriate words of assurance and comfort to those who were left to mourn the loss of a friend and loved one.

The large crowd that attended the funeral and the many floral tributes testified to the place that the late William Little held in the hearts of the people.
Among the floral tributes were: wreaths from this wife, his mother, brothers and sisters, his son Alvin of Owen Sound and his son Nelson of Durham, as well as wreaths and sprays from L.O.L. No. 2655, The Tehkummah Women's Institute, Mr. and Mrs. Alf. E. Duxbury, Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Duxbury, Mrs. Wesley Duxbury, Mr. Harry Duxbury, Mr. and Mrs. Dell Chatwell, Mr. and Mrs. Wilber McCauley, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Martin, Mr. and Mrs. D. Sim, Mr. and Mrs. Nate Case, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Parker, Mrs. A. Sloan, Mr. and Mrs. Chas? Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Martin?
The deepest sympathy of all go to the bereaved family and we trust that God will give them strength to carry on without the loved one who was called Home to where there is no more suffering or pain.
Pleasant in manner, patient in pain,
Our loss is his eternal gain,
His cheery way and smiling face
Are pleasure to recall,
He had a pleasant word for each
And died beloved by all,
But hark, a voice is heard through sorrow's gloom,
Death is the door to life and endless bloom,
Not as a foe He takes a dear one away,
But so that they may bloom in endless day.

A very sad accident occurred here on Thursday, the 11th inst, by which Mr. Wm. Little, sr., lost his life. He, with Mr. Wm. Hanar,(sic) was out deer hunting, and in passing through some brush the hammer of the gun was raised, causing the weapon to explode, shooting him in the arm and inflicting a terrible wound. Mr. Haner went for help and after some time the unfortunate man was removed to his home, very much exhausted from loss of blood. Dr. Shaw, of Manitowaning, was called in and dressed the arm, taking out a number of pieces of bone. Mr. Little had lost so much blood that he gradually sank, and died on the 12th inst. The Funeral took place on Sunday, the 14th, being conducted by the Rev. Mr. Cunningham, of Manitowaning, and was largely attended. [Gladys Lloyd]
1940 (handwritten)
Memorial Service For Mrs. E. Lloyd
A memorial service was held in St. Andrew’s United Church, Silver
Water, Sunday, March 31st, for the late Gladys Duncanson Lloyd. The death of Mrs. Lloyd in Sudbury on March 18th, from a heart attack, came as a profound shock to her many friends on Manitoulin, and while interment was made in Park Lawn Cemetery, Sudbury, it was felt a fitting tribute should be paid to the memory of the late Mrs. Lloyd in her home church. Full honor was given to memory of one who was widely noted for her unselfish devotion to the best interests of her home community and for her daily practice of the Christian virtues of unselfishness and helpful service.
The congregation was reminded there were few in the community who had not known the kindly ministries of her bedside attendance.
The name Duncanson, is associated with the very beginnings of Robinson
township, where the late Mrs. Lloyd was born thirty-six years ago and
where she had resided continuously, except for her training period in the General Hospital, Kincardine, and until she took up residence in Sudbury in 1939.
Married to Ewart Lloyd July 5th, 1928, there is left to mourn her
passing, the husband; two children, Georgina and William Ewart, of
Sudbury; her father, Lachlin Duncanson and two brothers, Arden and Norman of Silver Water.
Through the deep silence of the moonless dark,
Leaving no footprints of the path she trod,
Straight as an arrow cleaving to its mark,
Her soul went home to God
‘Alas,’ we cry, ‘she never saw the morn,
But fell asleep outwearied with the strife.’
Nay, rather, she arose and met the dawn
Of everlasting life.

Obituary
Norman Lloyd charted an exemplary course for others to follow

Norman Lloyd, proudly clad in his Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary uniform, will be remembered for his devotion to helping others in need.
By Jim Moodie
KAGAWONG—Raised on an island in the North Channel and recruited as a young man to staff a lighthouse during a crisis, Norman Lloyd of Kagawong retained a love of the water and a sense of public service throughout his life, devoting many of his later years to boating education and marine rescues.
Although quite ill and in need of oxygen during the final two years of his life, Mr. Lloyd would still set out on the water whenever possible, toting portable oxygen tanks in his boat. The week prior to his passing, last Monday at the age of 75, he was still talking about taking his doctor out for a spin on the North Channel.
Mr. Lloyd was born in Kagawong in 1931, but after his mother’s untimely death when Norman was just two-and-a half, he was sent to live with his light-keeping grandparents on Clapperton Island. Despite the tragic loss of his mother – who died during childbirth – and being uprooted to Clapperton, with no other siblings as company, Norman would reflect back on this unusual childhood quite fondly and with great detail: his friendship with a Native boy named Ben Buzwah; the horses his grandparents kept on the island and the trips made across the ice during winter; the 32-foot boat he was entrusted with driving to Little Current to Spanish to fetch supplies at the mere age of 10.
Later, when he was 18 and working on a farm near Kagawong, his uncle Bill Baker suffered a burst appendix while tending the Clapperton light, and Norman was rushed out to the island as a replacement. “I felt it was my duty to get out there,” he told the Expositor a hear-and-a-half ago, “You couldn’t let the light go out.”
Fittingly, a ceramic statue of a lighthouse made by son Roger, with a red light aglow in its miniature tower, adorned the lobby of the funeral home during a service last week, along with a boat figurine, both speaking to the departed citizen’s primary passions.
Mr. Lloyd made his living as an employee of Ontario Hydro, but he didn’t spend his spare time idly. Among his many extracurricular activities, Mr. Lloyd helped create the Billings Fire Department, served as a school board trustee, participated in the Gore Bay Masonic Lodge and the Royal Arch Masons, launched a Power Squadron for Manitoulin, and, for upwards of three decades, served as a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
One of his proudest achievements was being named Coast Guard Auxiliary president for this district, a sprawling area that stretches from the North Pole to the US border, and as far east and west as Quebec and Manitoba. In 2003, he was acknowledged for his dedication and capability in this role, becoming just the second person in Canada to be awarded a medal of exemplary service through the Coast Guard.
“He didn’t really have any hobbies because he didn’t have time for that,” noted wife Elva, who often accompanied her husband on search and rescue trips, while he, in turn, helped her with her hobby, assisted in the pouring of ceramics at the Lloyd home. Had Norman lived another six months, the two would have marked their 50th wedding anniversary in May.
Mr. Lloyd’s role with the Coast Guard Auxiliary was, in many ways, just the formalization of a duty he had already been performing. “He always sis go and rescue people,” noted his wife. “After we were married, police used to call him lots, because he knew the shoals and rocks.” When the auxiliary formed in the late 1970s, it was only natural that Norman would become involved.
Former OPP officer Larry Killens had occasion to engage Mr. Lloyd’s marine services a number of times during his tenure with the police, including one time when it Mr. Killens himself who required assistance. “I had taken some OPP brass out in my own boat, a 24-foot Grew, because the OPP boat wasn’t available,” he recalled. “Well, as luck would have it, something went wrong with the rear end of my boat, with smoke coming out.”
He radioed Mr. Lloyd for help, expecting to see him arrive in the 25-foot ‘Lazy Lady’ that the mariner typically employed for Coast Guard work. Apparently, Lazy Lady wasn’t available in this particular instance. “He came riding out with Elva in a little 14-foot aluminum boat,” recounted Mr. Killens with a mixture of amusement and respect.
As quaint as the episode might have seemed at the time, it is an example, said Mr. Killens, of Mr. Lloyd’s dedication to marine search and rescue. “It’s kind of a postman analogy,” he said. “He would come no matter what – rain, sleet or snow, in whatever kind of boat he could get.”
One time Mr. Lloyd himself got into trouble, as he was called out to find someone who had gone missing from Hideaway Lodge, but was low on gas for his own boat. “Hideaway only had four or five gallons that he could put in his tank,” recalled Elva. “Norman said he should never have gone out, but he did.”
The tank ran dry on the west side of Amedroz Island, and Mr. Lloyd spent half the night in the water, trying to keep his boat from being battered against the shore. The boat suffered a bent prop and shaft, but Mr. Lloyd emerged unscathed (if a bit tired and cold from his exertions).
Some marine rescues ended in tragedy, but generally there was a happy ending to the story. Whatever the outcome, Mr. Lloyd did his job, locating either an errant boater or an individual who had met a sad end. As son Barry put it, “I don’t think dad ever came back from a distress call without success. Either they’d found the body or everything was fine.”
There was no payment for such emergency services, except a bit of money to cover gasoline. “He did it because he liked it, and he liked helping people,” said his widow. “It wasn’t about himself.”
Austin Hunt of Kagawong, a long-serving wharfinger and reeve, described the late Mr. Lloyd as an exemplary citizen of the community, “who took part in a number of things, belonging to all manner of organizations.” He also noted that Mr. Lloyd “had a great mind for history and interest in marine heritage, and was a great help to us with historical facts.”
His passion for the water was something he was always keen to pass on, whether that meant baiting hooks for his grandchildren on fishing expeditions in the North Channel, or teaching marine safety courses to adults. Mr. Killens noted that “Norman got me involved in the Power Squadron,” adding, “he involved everyone who met him. He was one of those people who you hold up as a template of a good person.”
Mr. Lloyd was partial to his old wooden boat, and preferred inboards to outboards, according to his sons. But there was a running joke in the family about a replacement for the wood-hulled Lazy Lady. “Each year at Christmas we’d say, ‘what do you want?,’ and dad would say, ‘a new boat,’” recalled Earl. When a new fiberglass boat finally appeared five or six years ago, it was promptly dubbed, ‘It’s About Time.’
Family and friends were of prime importance to Mr. Lloyd, and his proudest accomplishment, according to wife Elva, was seeing his children flourish and adopt the same values of generosity and service that he personally tried to embody.
But if he had one overriding personal passion, it was clearly the waters of the North Channel, the waves of which provided a stirring yet comforting soundtrack to his boyhood on Clapperton Island. “He always loved the water and the outdoors,” said wife Elva, adding, with a twinkle to her grief-reddened eyes, “his first word was ‘gull.’”
The lighthouse at Clapperton Island, where Norman Lloyd spent his formative years, may now be long gone, and the light of Mr. Lloyd’s own life abruptly extinguished, but his example as a caring, channel-savvy skipper should shine for many years to come.
