Providence Bay
After a lingering illness, Mr. Hugh McDermid passed away on Friday last. Mr. McDermid had been for a long time a sufferer from cancer of the stomach, and from this suffered severe pain which was borne with much Christian patience. Accompanying this dread trouble, was also a condition of heart weakness which produced shortness of breathing from which at times he suffered much.
Mr. McDermid was highly respected in the community and was a true friend and loving neighbour.
He died enjoying a glad realization of his saviour’s presence and support. Seldom has the writer seen one on a death bed in the possession of such implicit trust, and such bright outlook for the future.
The funeral which took place on Sunday afternoon was largely attended, notwithstanding the inclement weather, evincing the high regard in which Mr. McDermid was held.
Mrs. McDermid and family have the sincere sympathy of all in their great affliction. The remains were interred at Providence Bay.

One Life Lost when Steamer Germanic sank the Victoria Collision at Blind River Friday Night Caused One Fatality
The life of Donald McDonald was lost by drowning Friday night at 9:40 when the tug Victoria K. collided with the steamer Germanic, about a mile and a half from Blind River. The Germanic was headed for Blind River at the time, and was travelling at the rate of ten miles per hour. The tug was making her best speed.
When out in the lake the Germanic answered he Victoria’s signal for starboard, but the Victoria K., instead of taking its course, wheeled to port and held that position. Captain Moles in charge of the Germanic, thought that the Victoria would change her course at any moment so held to starboard. When the collision occurred the Germanic was stopped instantly.
The Germanic hit the Victoria a glancing blow about amidships. She layed alongside the Germanic for four minutes and then sank. While alongside the passengers were taken on board the Germanic. There were four girls, seven men, and two boys on board the boat besides a crew of three. The Germanic lowered one of her boats after the tug sank and looked around for the drowned man, but no sight of him could be found. The Germanic then headed for Blind River at 10:15 p.m. with the rescued on board.
The tug was owned by Dan Sullivan of Meldrum Bay, for which place it was headed when the collision occurred. Sullivan was in charge of the tug at the time.

Obituary
On August 27th there passed away at an advanced age one of the earliest pioneers of Manitoulin Island, and one who was long identified with its milling and lumbering interests. William Marshall McDonald, of Sandfield, was born in the town of Perth, Ont., on May 24th, 1820, having been exactly one year younger than our late Queen.
His father came to Canada as a soldier to fight in the war of 1812, against the American aggressor. He had previously seen service in India, fought in the Peninsular War in Spain, was present at the burial of Sir John Moore in 1809 when that heroic commander was laid to rest by the light of the lantern on the ramparts of Corunna. Subsequently Mr. McDonald’s father followed Wellington to victory, and was with him in the epoch-forming and decisive battle of Waterloo. Having been pensioned after Waterloo he came to Canada, with which he had on his former visit been favorably impressed, and settled in the ten village of Perth, in Eastern Ontario.
Here the subject of this sketch was born and spent his younger days. In 1844 Mr. McDonald married Miss Loretta Harris, of Perth, he being at that time foreman of the lumbering business there of a Mr. Shortreed, a lumber dealer. In 1853 Mr. and Mrs. McDonald, with three children, started for the county of Bruce in Western Ontario, then largely a wilderness. They journeyed in a wagon drawn by oxen. In this wagon, protected by a tent covering, they slept where night overtook them. Thus through a tract much of which was a wilderness, it took two weeks to reach their destination. In Bruce County Mr. McDonald settled on a farm, clearing theron (sic) ninety acres of land.
Over forty years ago he visited Manitoulin Island, coming across from Bruce County in a row boat. Shortly afterwards he again came to the island and held the position of foreman of the Michaels Bay Lumber Company. He moved his family here thirty-six years ago, and later sold his farm in Bruce. Thus he was one of the earliest permanent residents on the island. He erected what was known as the Sandfield Mills, consisting of a grist mill and saw mill, the former being the second of such erected on the Manitoulin, and the latter being among the earliest of lumber producing industries. These industries proved a great boon to the early settlers. Perhaps prior to his death Mr. McDonald was the oldest of the very early settlers, and the one who had been longest resident on the island.
He was a true friend to the early settlers, and his hospitality will long be remembered. In speaking of him to one of these, the latter said, speaking of the settler in general, “if we wanted four we got it, and if we wanted money we got it.”
Our of a large family nine still survive, of whom Andrew N., of the township of Campbell, is the only resident of Manitoulin.
The remains were followed to their last resting place at Hilly Grove cemetery by a large procession, among whom were many of the early residents from various parts of the island.

Providence Bay
(Too late for last week.)
In the late terrible railway disaster at the Spanish River, this island was not permitted to escape. Mr. George McDougall, son of George McDougall, sr., of Carnarvon, was one of the victims. Mr. McDougall was on his way from Copper Cliff to Sault Ste. Marie. He had given up his situation in the former place to accept one in the latter town and was to meet his employer on the evening of that sad day, and also he (sic) home to his wife and child. God purposed that it should be otherwise. What makes this affliction all the more sad is the fact that just four months previously Mr. and Mrs. McDougall sr., lost their third son, a promising young man. Mr. George McDougall was an industrious young man, sober in his habits and was well liked. His sad and awfully sudden death has cast a gloom over the village. His widow and relatives have the since sympathy of the community.

Providence Bay
On Monday morning the death call came to one who lived in this vicinity, and who was only in the spring time of life and in possession of all the buoyancy and hope of youth. William, third son of Mr. and Mrs. George McDougall, contracted typhoid fever some weeks ago. Along with this trouble other complications set in, resulting complete paralysis of the left side. He got safely past the crisis of the fever, but the other troubles proved too great for his reduced vitality, and nature had to succumb. A serious spinal disease had become partly developed prior to the fever, and this, no doubt, had much to do with his early departure. He had always enjoyed excellent health and was a bright young man. He leaves three brothers and three sisters. His parents, brothers and sisters have the deep sympathy of the community in the loss of a dear brother and son thus called away at the early age of eighteen years. Two of the sisters are Mrs. W. Kennedy and Mrs. J. McKechnie, of this village.

Kagawong
It is with much regret that we have to report the death of Thos. F. McGaughey which occurred at his father’s residence in Billings at noon on Sunday. A little over a year ago he went to Toronto and joined the police force, and during the rainy season at exhibition time he contracted a cold and pluersy (sic) followed by lung trouble and he soon fell a victim of that dreaded disease consumption. He returned home last week and despite everything that could be done by kind friends and neighbors it gradually wore down his splendid physique. The large number of friends who followed his remains to its last resting place on Tuesday afternoon was evidence of the esteem in which he was held in the community.

DWIGHT McGAULEY

Obituary
Renowned Island country musician Dwight McGauley died in his Tehkummah home last Tuesday at the age of 53.
Mr. McGauley, who had been battling cancer for some months, was best known for his golden voice. He formed the Voyageurs, a band popular with Manitoulin teens, when he was a teenager himself. The group played at numerous dances, talent shows and community benefits over the past 36 years.
Dale Gilchrist, an Island boy and a country recording artist, said although he has rubbed shoulders with many famous performers, no entertainer has impressed him more than Mr. McGauley.
"I think Dwight was probably the best singer on the planet," Mr. Gilchrist said. "Any song he ever took from anyone who was an original artist, Dwight always sang it better than they did."
At one time, Mr. McGauley won a talent competition which offered him the chance to start a professional career. He chose, instead, to remain in the community he loved best. Although Mr. McGauley had the charisma and stage presence of a veteran performer, his brother Vance said he could be shy. "He was outgoing, but he wasn't. He was outgoing on stage, but he could be shy in some situations."
Music was only one facet of Mr. McGauley's life, however. He was also known as a family man.
"Dwight was a hell of a good guy," said Vance. "He was a really good brother. He was the type who was always there when you needed him."
He was the dearly loved husband of Elaine McGauley and loving father of Debbie MacDonald and husband Duncan of Manitowaning and Heather and Kristina McGauley of Tehkummah. He was the proud grandfather of Evan McGauley and Victoria MacDonald. He was the dear brother of Keith and his wife Elva of Little Current, Darrel and wife Colleen of South Baymouth, Vance and wife Mary of Mindemoya and brother-in-law to Lori Leeson.
He was predeceased by sister Diane and brother Greg. He was the beloved nephew of Ida Roper, Seward and Pat Hall and Everett Hall. He is survived by nieces and nephews. He was well known and liked in his community as evidenced by the benefit held in Tehkummah late this spring. The tribute to Mr. McGauley packed the town's hall to capacity.
At the event, co-ordinator Debbie Robinson described him as a "very talented and extremely modest man."
"He told me back stage at an event one night that he was a very fortunate man," she added. "He had an understanding wife and family. They spent many Saturday nights at home alone over the years while he was out entertaining us." Money raised from the evening went toward the addition of a downstairs bedroom and bathroom added onto the McGauley home. Men came out in droves from the area to construct the addition. In fact, so many came out, there was not enough work to keep everyone busy.
Mr. McGauley worked for the Ministry of Transportation for 21 years. He also enjoyed woodworking.
The funeral service was held last Friday afternoon at the Fairview United Church in Tehkummah.

MRS. ALICE McGIBBON, 1935

In the passing of Mrs. Alice McGibbon, at Fernlee on Friday, August 16, the Manitoulin lost one of its pioneers, and Silver Water a good neighbour and devoted friend. The neighbourliness that made Silver Water fifty-five years ago a desirable place to find a home is a distinguishing mark of its early pioneers. The late Mrs. McGibbon is remembered by the older residents of the community for her very fine spirit of helpfulness, fully shared by the late Dougal McGibbon who predeceased her about fifteen years ago.
Coming from Ancaster to the Island at the age of ten, Alice Kemp, as a girl and later as the wife of Dougald McGibbon, shared all the hazards, hard work and wholesome joys that form the life of the pioneer everywhere. They simply repeated what was done all over Canada in the early days with an axe, a yoke of oxen and unshakable faith, helped to build a prosperous and happy community. The late Mrs. McGobbpm leaves to mourn her passing three sons and four daughters: William Lewis McGibbon, Meldrum Bay; Earl Reginald McGibbon, Gordon; Hugh Calvin McGibbon, Fernlee; Mrs. Clifford Rumley, Fernlee; Mrs. Ernest Williams, Meldrum Bay; Mrs. Charlton, Owen Sound and Edith Noreen McGibbon, Owen Sound. Also seven brothers and sisters, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
The funeral service was from the home of Mrs. Clifford Rumley, Fernlee, on Saturday afternoon and interment was made in the family plot in Silver Lake Cemetery. Rev. O.D. Cadotte, pastor of St. Andrew’s United Church, officiated, with Rev. B.P. Fuller, rector, of St. Peter’s Anglican Church assisting.
