Mrs. Mary L. Ogle
Early in the morning of Jan. 28th the spirit of Mrs. Mary Louise Ogle took its flight, after she had been ailing about ten days, during the 1st few days of which she seemed in a critical condition. Mrs. Ogle’s maiden name was Mary Booker, the youngest daughter of the late Mr. Anthony Booker, and she was born at Ballyjamesduff, County of Cavan, Ireland, but spent most of her life at Jonesboro’ House in the adjoining County of Meath, where in 1867 she was married to Robert F. Ogle.
They came to Canada forty years ago and located on Manitoulin Is. For a short time they resided at the east side of Mindemoya Lake, where Mr. Ogle conducted a small general store. The family moved to Providence Bay in 1883 where Mr. Ogle was appointed Postmaster, which office he held until his death in 1903.
Mrs. Ogle is survived by one brother, in Ireland, and three children: Helen and Henry, in Ireland, and Frances, in Providence Bay. The deceased wife in her eightieth year.
She was a faithful and loving mother, and along with many others bravely bore the hardships of pioneer life in a new country with a more rigorous climate and more trying conditions than she had been accustomed to in the Old Land, yet was never heard to complain. She was a consistent and faithful Christian, Her remains were interred in the Providence Bay cemetery. Miss Ogle has the sympathy of the community.

JOHN "JACK" WILLIAM ORFORD

In loving memory of John "Jack" William Orford who passed away peacefully surrounded with family on Friday, April 7, 2006 at the age of 68 years.
Knew all and was known by all. For over 30 years Jack owned and operated the Sale Barn in Little Current, buying and selling livestock (except for goats) and trucked. He was seen at all hours of the day and night continuing on his quest of fulfilling the customer's request. Even in the last weeks Jack was still dedicated to his business trying to make arrangements to meet the needs of his loyal customers. Biography was his favourite show and he loved to relax and enjoy a hockey or baseball game on TV. He shared with A.J. the love of McDonald's, and enjoyed the coffee shop comradery.

Obituary

Jack Orford was honest as day was long

by Michael Erskine

MANITOULIN--There are captains of industry and marshals of commerce in the world, but in small communities like Manitoulin, some of the real giants seem very unremarkable until they are, unthinkingly gone from our world.
John William ’Jack’ Orford’s life was about cattle--buying and selling livestock for the over 30 years he owned and operated the Little Current Sales Barn.
Working six days a week, Mr. Orford’s favourite relaxation was to drive out to the farm and check on his cows, according to his only daughter Norma Jean Orford.
“My father was particularly dedicated to the farmers here,” she said. “They were a pretty important part of his life.”
Trucking was certainly Mr. Orford’s other great passion in life. He bought out Manitoulin Transport’s cattle trucking business in 1990, and for many years he delivered feed all over Ontario, trucked cedar posts and slabs into the States and he always arrived, although rarely on time.
“He was never on time,” laughed customer and friend David McCauley from Tehkummah, down by the Slash. But there was a good reason for that, he explained.
“He wasn’t like a lot of truck guys,” he said. “If you were having trouble with a calving when he came to drop something off, he would stay and lend a hand. He knew so much about cattle and he was never in too much of a hurry to help.”
For Jack Orford, it wasn’t just all about the money.
“It’s kind of an end to an era,” remarked farmer Jim Anstice of Tehkummah. “Jack, with his sales barn, gave farmers an option--he was there and he was near. There are nothing but good things to say about him.”
“Yes, yes, yes,” Mr. Orford’s voice would exclaim, his voice rising with excitement, when he felt prices were going well at the auction in his barn. If they weren’t up to what he thought they should be, he would urge the buyers to reach deeper for a fair price--wiping his hand across his forehead in exasperation and calling out: “Way too low!” More often than not, the prices at the Little Current Sales barn would be as good or better than those to be found miles away in southern Ontario.
“There are businesses that have been going for years that are based on trust between buyers and sellers,” said Mr. McCauley.
“He was honest as the day was long,” agreed Phil Burnford, a long-time employee, customer and friend to Mr. Orford--almost from the day Mr. Burnford arrived on the Island in 1977. “His word was truly his bond.”
It is a recurring theme as you talk to friends, family and customers about Mr. Orford’s life and times--the traits cited are honesty and a solid country wisdom that he was willing to share.
“He loved to talk to people,” said Mr. Burnford, citing perhaps another reason for his legendary tardy arrivals.
But the role he played in Island farm life is impossible to miss.
“Without that sales barn a lot of people would have been lost,” said Mr. Burnford. “It wasn’t easy. A different businessman might have tossed it in years ago, but Jack knew the sales barn was more important to people than just the dollars and cents of it.”
Mr. Orford’s daughter said that his family as (sic) going to try and maintain the sales barn operation that Mr. Orford loved so well, but recent changes to legislation may make that task very difficult.
Perhaps it is indeed an end of an era with the passing of Jack Orford, but it is an era that many will look upon with fond nostalgia and a longing for what has been lost.

WILLIAM ORR
Little Current, March 26 (Special)

Mr. William Orr of Sheguiandah died at Toronto on Wednesday after a lingering illness. His body was brought home on Thursday and taken to his former home near Sheguiandah. He was one of the veterans of the Great War, went overseas with the 119th Battalion and was gassed, his experiences finally resulting in his death. After his return from overseas he married Violet daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Armstrong, of town, and shortly after moved to Sault Ste. Marie. After a few years at the place he again returned to the island and for the past year has been staying at the farm near Sheguiandah. Gradually declining in health it was thought that he should have expert medical care and he left for Toronto some months ago. Last week word was received that his condition was serious and his mother left for Toronto, arriving in time to see him alive. He is survived by his wife and his mother, as well as four brothers Herbert, of the town line, Louis of home, Alvin of Akron, Ohio, and Granville of Sheguiandah. A large number of the veterans attended the funeral from town and country, and quite a number were also present from outside points to pay their last respects to a former comrade. A contingent 30 strong represented the veterans from Little Current and were headed by Capt. Graham. They were taken out to the Orr residence in Howland township, and marched from the house a mile and a half to Sheguiandah. Arriving at the church the party formed up and saluted the casket as it passed through the ranks. The soldiers each received a wreath which they took into the church and placed on the casket, the ex-service men then taking seats at one side of the church. The Union Church Minister preached the funeral sermon commenting on the fine war record of the deceased and dwelling briefly on the injuries received in the war, that led to his death. The church was crowded to the doors and many beautiful wreaths testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held. After the service the ex-service men lined up and again under the command of Capt. Graham marched to the cemetery, where they formed up and the casket, with all ex-service men, as pall bearers, was taken between the saluting ranks.
Before the burial service was commenced Last Post was sounded by W. A. Sims, of Little Current, and the flag taken off the casket. Two hundred witnessed the military burial and saw the last rites performed over a former comrade, and despite the bitter cold the turnout of the veterans was one that showed the late war though over still mode comrades that will unite when ever the occasion warrants.

She graduated from North Bay Normal School, became a teacher near Little Current and then attended Victoria College (U. of T) from which she graduated with the class of ’38. While successfully running a large house and raising a family, she somehow managed to teach kindergarten, becoming a favourite of a whole generation of children at Toronto’s Cottingham School. In addition, she seemed to find time to obtain many swimming and life-saving awards, take art lessons and become an accomplished landscape painter, study Japanese language and culture, and keep in touch with her family and friends. She was a marvel of energy and an example of her strength and loyalty to all of us. We remember wonderful summers at the cottage near Whitefish Falls, her love of animals of all sorts, her lengthy list of birds sighted, and her ability to sparkle when life was difficult. A service of remembrance was held at St. Clements Anglican Church on Saturday, October 2. If desired donations may be made to the Parkinson Foundation of Canada.

Obituary
Ivan Owen
One our bright and much beloved young men has been called away from the happy scenes among which he had passed his early days.
Mr. Ivan Owen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Owen of Carnarvon, came home ill in the fall. He had been assisting on one of the boats and had contracted typhoid fever. Although he passed through the crisis of the fever apparently fairly well, he had not sufficient strength to recover from its effects. He struggled on bravely, being always of a happy disposition, but complications see in, and the end came early on Wednesday of last week.
Mr. Owen was characterized by a cheerfulness of temperament and kindliness of disposition, which made him a general favourite. He bore his sickness with Christian patience and fortitude, and died in the realization of a strong faith in his Saviour.
Many friends attended the funeral to show their respect for the departed and their sympathy with the family who had lost a kind son and brother.
A shore Service was held at the house and the funeral sermon was preached at Providence Bay on Sunday morning, many being present, notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather.
Mr. and Mrs. Owen and family have the sympathy of many friends.
The Recorder, Gore Bay, Thursday, December 20, 1917
