[AGNES ROBERTSON]

Local News Items
Much sympathy is felt on every side towards Mr. and Mrs. A. Robertson, of Ice Lake, for their heavy affliction in the sad and sudden loss of their bright little two year old daughter. Mr. Robertson was engaged alone upon some requiring work in the mill, and having need of some one to lay in a block while he lifted, Mrs. Robertson undertook to do this and their little one followed into the mill. In a little while they became conscious of the child’s disappearance, and after search the distressing calamity became too apparent; without noise or cry of any kind the little one had fallen through the belt hole in the floor to a depth of about 10 feet, and was drowned in the watercourse below. The funeral took place on Sunday and was attended by large numbers, the interment being in the cemetery at Mills, close by the grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Baker.

Heart Attack Claims Pioneer
The sudden death on May 19 of Frederick Rowe, Howland township farmer made the first break among the sons of Arthur and William Rowe, who pioneered the district now known as the Rowe settlement, near Little Current. The late Mr. Rowe suffered a heart attack while returning to the house after feeding his stock in the barn, and died instantly. One of the best known and most popular farmers of the district, Mr. Rowe had made a success of his farming even during the recent lean years. Unable to do any heavy work for several years, Mr. Rowe had not been in good health for some time. He was still very active, however, and his sudden death came as a great shock to his family and neighbors.
He was born in Markham, Ont., 66 years ago, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Rowe, and came to Howland township with his parents as a young boy, when his father came to settle in the district. He received his education at Little Current. On July 5, 1899, he was married to Miss Jennie Cathcart, who survives him together with one daughter and one son, Annie and Morland, both at home. One sister, Mrs. Rhoda Miller, of Orillia; and two brothers, Robert, of Howland township, and Albert, of Little Current also survive.
A largely-attended funeral service was held from the family home on Saturday afternoon at two o’clock, with Rev. E. Wrightson of Little Current and Rev. E. Weeks of Manitowaning officiating.

Another Old Pioneer is Called By Death
Mrs. Agnes Royal Was a Resident of Manitoulin Island for the Past Fifty Years On April 26th the death occurred of Mrs. Agnes Royal, widow of the late Frank Royal of Burpee township, at the age of 73 years. The late Mrs. Royal was born in the township of Essa, county of Simcoe. Her parents came to Canada and settled in Ontario. Mrs. Royal came to the Manitoulin when 23 years of age and settled on the farm, which is now in the occupation of Mr. Duke Beckerton. After her marriage to Mr. Frank Royal they moved to an adjoining farm, where they lived until 1899, when they moved to Burpee. Seventeen years ago her husband died and in the following year she moved back to the old homestead, which they had first located, and which was her home until the time of her death.
Two daughters and one son survive her, Mrs. Jos. Williams, Mrs. M. Johnson of Gore Bay and Mr. James Royal of Parkinson, also eleven grandchildren. Her sister, Miss S. A. Beckerton and two of her brothers, Duke and Bob Beckerton, still live on the old homestead. One brother, Mr. T. Beckerton, is at Birch River.
The late Mrs. Royal was one of the first pioneers in the western end of the Manitoulin. All through the early years she was noted for her kindness and willingness to help others. In addition to the hard work of the early settlers there devolved upon her the extra care of nursing, as sickness entered the home, but through all she bore bravely up, doing her utmost even when her own health was very far from good. Death occurred as the result of a paralytic stroke.
The funeral took place on Sunday, April 28th from the residence of Mr. Jos. Williams, Gore Bay, service being held in the house and interment in Gordon cemetery. A number of very beautiful wreaths were placed on the casket. Rev. W. T. Swainson conducted the service.

W. O. RUNNALLS

POPULAR CITIZEN DEAD
The world wide epidemic of Spanish Influenza is still carrying on its ravages and claiming its victims. The latest to fall before it was our well known and popular citizen, W.O. Runnalls, of Barrie Island. He had not been in the best of health for some time when attacked by the disease and pneumonia developed later on. The most painstaking nursing could not avail to save him. He passed peacefully away on Saturday afternoon, March 29, 1919, surrounded by his sorrowing wife and family.
William Oliver Runnalls was born at Ice Lake on May 1, 1875, and was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W.N. Runnalls. When 10 years of age he came with his parents to Barrie Island where he has resided ever since. On December 15, 1897, he was married to Miss Kate Jennings also of Barrie Island. Besides his wife he leaves behind him a family of five boys and two girls, Clara, Nelson, Lawrence, Cecil, Norris, Stanley and Nellie to mourn his loss. He is also survived by his mother and four brothers, Edwin of Moosejaw, Henry of Barrie Island, Arthur at Beeton and Percy with the overseas forces.
Deceased was recognized by all who knew him as one of the leading men in the rural life of the district. Public spirited in the highest sense of the word, possessed of more than ordinary gifts of mind and heart, he was ever ready to devote all his energies to the betterment of his fellow agriculturalists. In the early days of Farmers’ Institute work, residents over a large part of the district will remember his faithfulness in driving around the government delegate year after year and assisting in the meetings. He has held the position of President with the Manitoulin Co-operative Association since its inception. At the last meeting of that society he was not only re-elected as President but was presented with a handsome plaque as a token of appreciation. Since his death, we learn that as a further mark of gratitude the same Association has undertaken to defray his funeral expense.
The temperance cause had in him a fearless and able supporter and ungrudged labour was given by him in its interests.
In religion, he was a Methodist by persuasion but a firm believer in church union and has all his life been a recognized leader in his home church on Barrie Island. He was appointed as Sunday School Superintendent when nineteen years of age and has held the office ever since. Under his skillful guidance the school has risen to be one of the best organized in the district. His leadership will be greatly missed by both teachers and pupils. The Manitoulin Sunday School Association will also miss his familiar face and valued counsel at its annual convention which he never failed to attend.
But his loss will be most keenly felt in his own home circle where his wife and family mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father. It seems almost unnecessary to state that the genuine sympathy of a host of friends over the entire district goes out to the sorrowing relatives in their time of trouble, but while their loss is heavy and deep, we cannot forget that in the death of W.O. Runnalls not only his home and relatives are suffering, but the community, the district, the church, every cause that had the welfare of humanity at heart has lost a valued friend and supporter. A gap has been left in the ranks that will be hard to fill. In the words of an ancient king who had lost an esteemed servant we would say, “Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel.”
(This eulogy appeared in The Recorder on April 8, 1919, and was written by the Rev. Robert Wiseman, the minister of the Barrie Island-Gordon field. He was a neighbour of the deceased and a close friend of the family.)

Memorial Service
A befitting service was held in the United Church, Barrie Island on Sunday afternoon May 11th as a Memorial for the late W.O. Runnalls. The church was filled to the limit of its capacity with a large sympathetic audience of relatives and friends. Visitors were there from Gore Bay, Gordon, Mills and even as far as Billings and Little Current who had come to pay their last respects to the memory of a worthy citizen. The platform was tastefully draped by the ladies of the congregation. The choir of Gore Bay United Church was present and led in the service of praise with happy effect. An appropriate sermon for the occasion was delivered by the pastor Rev. R. Wiseman who chose for this text Psa.37:37, "Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace."

E.L. Russell
There passed away on Sunday evening, July 20th at the home of his parents, Pte. E.L. Russell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Russell of Tehkummah.
Pte Russell was twenty one years of age, a very estimable young man. He enlisted in the 119th Batn. In Jan. 1916 and crossed over to France the following November. He served in the trenches for eighteen months undergoing the trying ordeal of trench life doing his bit at Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele and other engagements.
From the effects of being gassed and being buried by a shell he contracted the dreaded disease which caused his death. Since returning home last December he underwent treatment at Guelph Hospital which proved unavailing. He was brought home in May. From this time on his decline was rapid in spite of all medical skill and loving care.
He passed to his reward on Sunday evening. Rev. Mr. Munro conducted the ceremony and six comrades of the 119th Batn., were pall bearers standing to attention to the strains of the dead march in Sol. They then escorted the body to its last resting place in Hilly Grove Cemetery.
The esteem in which he was held was sown by the large number of friends who were present at the graveside. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family which consists of father and mother, two brothers and four sisters who all reside in the neighborhood of Tehkummah.
