OLIVER VINCENT DEAD
On Tuesday morning Mr. Vincent passed away after a somewhat protracted illness. The cause we believe being cancer. About a year ago Mrs. Vincent died and Mr. Vincent began to fail. A visit to Ottawa hospital revealed the fact that cancer had set in and a real cure was hopeless. Later a visit to Rochester Miu confirmed the fact. Since that
time he has steadily failed till the end came. Mr. Vincent was one of the old inhabitants of Little Current. Starting in a small way, by diligence and thrift he worked up till he was able to engage in store keeping since that he has made a success so that he was able to retire from business some years ago. But a life of inaction did not please him so he returned to business after a few years. He was an esteemed citizen and took his part in public business serving as councellor etc.
His funeral takes place this afternoon to Mountain View Cemetery .

DEATH OF A VETERAN
Died at his residence, Carnarvon, on Monday, Jan 11th, in the 86th year of his age, Henry Vincer, one of the many heroes of the British Empire, who, after years of honorable service under the flag that has braved a thousand years the battle and the breeze, became a quiet citizen in this Canada of ours and a model of courtesy, orderly habits and honest industry. Volumes might be written from the mass of official documents in the possession of his family, many of them relating to his merit as a soldier, certified by his superior officers. Suffice it to say, he was born in the parish of Herne, Kent County, near Canterbury, England. He enlisted in the second battalion of the rifle brigade, Nov 9th 1835, was one of the Guards of Honour when the Princess Victoria was proclaimed Queen of Great Britain and Ireland. He had the same distinction at her coronation, and when her happy and auspicious
wedding took place he was one of the privileged ones who got his beer and cheese in accordance with the ancient custom of the olden time. How
interesting those details would be could we have more space to enlarge upon just now when the world at large are soon about to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the long and glorious reign of our Queen! What tender memories would be evoked in the minds of our bereaved comrades could our Carnarvon veteran have been privileged in person to recall to her mind in his clear, concise way those happy incidents of her early life! Could he also relate how in the course of duty he clapped the Duke of Wellington into the guardhouse, and other early incidents of the stern soldier, yet, who for the space of twenty-two years was a quiet and respected resident of the Manitoulin, with no enemy but many friends. Deceased having at his own request received an honorable discharge from the army, received for many years a handsome pension, the last quarterly installment coming to hand the morning previous to his death. Wm. Vincer, the well-known, popular, and efficient township clerk of Carnarvon, is the deceased's only son. Three daughters survive him, Agness, now Mrs. Bain residing in the United States, Sarah, his beloved and faithful housekeeper, and Mrs. R.H. Cairns, whose husband is principle of the high school at Chilliwack, B.C. The deceased was
buried in the Carnarvon Cemetery in the presence of a large gathering of
friends side by side with his wife, who died eleven years ago, the
officiating clergymen being Revs. Henderson and Brett.
Note.- The story of his arrest of the Iron Duke is a positive fact. Our
Carnarvon Veteran once did what Napoleon with all his invincible legions
could not do and none gave him more praise than the Duke himself.
