[MARY ELLEN WIBER]

Pioneer resident of roundabout 1930 Manitoulin Passes
Mindemoya, May 14 - The death occurred Sunday May 1, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Thos. Farquhar, Mindemoya, of one of Manitoulin's early pioneer women, in the person of Mrs. Mary Ellen Wiber, who was born at Maple Ontario in 1862, and came to Manitoulin with her parents, John and Catherine Waterhouse in 1876, being at the time fourteen years old. Her three brothers predeceased her some years ago.
The Waterhouse family settled on a farm on the eighth line of Billings township, where their home came to be known in the Presbyterian church records as "The Waterhouse Mission". Here the Rev. Hugh McKay and other pioneer missionaries conducted services and here the daughter of the home displayed no inconsiderable talent as organist and leader of congregational singing. Years after as her family grew up, she was for many years the organist in the new Billings Church for the erection and support of which she laboured unceasingly.
In 1882 she married Walter John Wiber, who came from London, England and took up the farm so widely known as the "Wiber Homestead", also on the eighth line of Billings township.
Again her home became a central community meeting place, where the neighbours, drawn by this good woman's consecrated musical talent, gathered from time to time to enjoy the hospitality of her home.
In 1904 a great sorrow came to this happy home when her husband sustained bodily injury resulting in his death shortly afterwards leaving her to the sole care of a family consisting of eight children together with the management of the farm.
Her Christian fortitude and cheerful disposition enabled her to take up her daily tasks and continue her church activities in a truly wonderful way. About fifteen years ago she was forced by ill health to give up the active life on the farm and since had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Thos. Farquhar for a time at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and for the last ten years at Mindemoya, Manitoulin Island.
While residing at Sault Ste. Marie the late Mrs. Wiber was identified as an active member of St. Paul's Presbyterian church and according as her health permitted participated with keen interest in the activities of church life. The same could be said of her association with United Church at Mindemoya.
During the last two or three years with rapidly declining health she found much enjoyment in gathering her grandchildren around the piano and training them to express in words of song the musical strains so dear to her.
She is survived by the following sons and daughters - Stanley of Calgary Alta.; Russell of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario; Amy (Mrs. Thos. Farquhar), of Mindemoya, Ontario; Ralph, Billings Township, on the old homestead; Nell (Mrs. John Ferguson), Sheguiandah, Ontario; Charles, Trenton, Michigan; Dorothy, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. All of whom, excepting Stanley the eldest were present at the funeral. She is also survived by twenty-one grandchildren.
A brief service was conducted at the home of her pastor, Rev. S.J. Proctor, B.D.
At Kagawong United Church, which was filled to overflowing, Rev. W.H. Bradford of Gore Bay, a former pastor conducted a service which was truly unique in language, sentiment and spirit paying tribute to the sterling worth of the deceased.
The Billings choir sang appropriate hymns and Edwin Shepherd of Sault Ste. Marie, the sole "No Night There".
Interment was in Kagawong's cemetery beside her husband and daughter Kathleen who predeceased her some years ago.
The array of beautiful floral tokens evidenced the high esteem and regret at the death of Mrs. Wiber and sympathy for those bereaved. The pall bearers were the following all old neighbours of Billings township: David Munroe, John McAnsh, John Greenfield, John Bowser, Wm. McAnsh, Robert Tustian.

Pioneer Resident Passes At Meldrum
John George Wickett
A true pioneer in every sense of the word, Mr. George Wickett of Meldrum Bay passed away on December 19th in his 84th year. Born in Wentworth County on November 29th 1858, the late Mr. Wickett came to Manitoulin at the age of twenty-one years and after working at timbering and clearing land for a short time, he settled on the farm on which he has resided for the past fifty-eight years, about three miles from the village of Meldrum Bay
On October 13th, 1884, he was united in marriage to Miss Janet Baillie of Gore Bay and on their newly acquired land the young couple entered into the many varied labours of the early days. In recalling early history of the township, both Mr. and Mrs. Wickett were possessed of fine memories and were able to relate many an interesting story of the struggles of the pioneer families.
Until a few months ago, Mr. Wickett enjoyed fairly good health and was quite active, taking a keen interest in the newspapers and daily broadcasts of news to keep him well informed on the war situation. For twelve years he served on the school board, and as long as health and strength permitted both he and Mrs. Wickett were regular attendants at church and were ever ready and willing to do anything for the betterment of the community. Their home was always open to the traveler, and in the early days the ministers and teachers always found hospitality in their home.
Of a family of eleven children, nine are still living and are scattered from Alaska to California. They are: John of Alaska, Mrs. R. Billings of California, Mrs. G. Billings of Washington, Mrs. Thos. Tomlinson of Detroit, Mrs. Donald Murray of Meldrum Bay, Miss Belle Wicket of Toronto, Arthur of Toronto, Archie on the homestead and Mrs. Louis Stephens of Meldrum Bay. William was killed at Vimy Ridge in the first Great War and George died some years ago. Mrs. Wickett also survives as well as nineteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, December 21st, from their home with interment being made in Meldrum Bay cemetery.

Three Children Burned to Death - Shocking Tragedy at Little Current - date unknown

On Wednesday, August 4, about noon the fire bell rang and as usual people rushed to find out where the fire was. It was found to be a small barn and other buildings on Bruce Wilkin's place. The engine could do nothing on account of the hay, etc., and in a very short time the buildings were in a mass of flames. As the wind was blowing from a safe quarter there seemed to be no more danger. The town received a severe shock when the word went around that three young children who had been sleeping in the hay mow of one of the buildings, had perished in the flames. The children were between the ages of 5 and 6 years of age, two of them belonging to Mrs. Utley, her only children, and the other to Mr. Wilkins. An inquest is being conducted.

Death of John Wilkinson
The death of Mr. John Wilkinson which occurred Saturday morning, the 13th inst., removes one of the very few West Essians who have lived in that neighborhood all their lives. Mr. Wilkinson was born in the year 1847 on the farm on which he spent most of his life and in the home on which his demise occurred. He came of north of Ireland stock, his parents being among the first to penetrate the forest and make a clearing in this end of Essa township. When a very young man Mr. Wilkinson obtained a teacher’s certificate and for nineteen years taught at No. 1, Essa and at Elm Grove. In 1878 on the death of his father, Mr. Wilkinson moved to the homestead and farmed in addition to teaching school for many years. Because of his forceful character, his education his ability to express himself and his sterling reputation among all who knew him, Mr. Wilkinson was a leader in his community for upwards of half a century and his rigid interpretations of right and wrong, together with his consistent example, have gone far in shaping the destines of many men who have gone out from Essa and made good in Canada and the United states.
All his life Mr. Wilkinson was a member of the Anglican church and up till a couple of years ago when illness prevented, it was seldom that he missed service in St. Peters. Last year was the first time in more than half a century that he missed the annual vestry meeting. For many years he was the leading spirit in the Sunday school. In political matters Mr. Wilkinson was an unswerving Conservative and during his lifetime only once questioned the attitude of the party which he was always ready to defend. That was in 1896. In 1875 Mr. Wilkinson married Emma Beckett of Cookstown, who survive together with a family of five liston (sic) sons and daughters.
-Alliston Herald
-Deceased was a cousin to Mr. Arthur Wilkinson and Mrs. Alf Lowrey of Gore Bay.

JOHN J. WILKINSON, January 15, 1920

The community of Mills was saddened last week by the loss of one of its most esteemed citizens, in the person of John J. Wilkinson, who succumbed to an attack of Hemiplegia after a brief illness. He had been in poor health for over two years, and was not in a condition to withstand an attack of any serious malady.
On Wednesday evening, January 7, shortly after retiring he collapsed and although he seemed to rally somewhat on Friday, he gradually grew weaker until he passed quietly away on Saturday, January 10 at 6:00 p.m. The deceased was 61 years of age and was born in the township of Essa on September 16, 1858. He came to Manitoulin in 1883 and settled in Mills. On July 11, 1892 he was married to Miss Nellie Haugh of Essa who survives to mourn his loss. Three children who also remain, one daughter Hettie, and two sons Arthur and Lyle. The oldest son Allen went overseas with the 119th Battalion and paid the supreme sacrifice on May 24, 1917 at Vimy Ridge. His is also survived by one brother, Arthur, who resides in Gore Bay, and two sisters, Mrs. Alfred Lowrie of Mills and Mrs. Hugh Edgar of Essa. The funeral took place on Monday January 12 from his home to Mills cemetery. The service at the house was conducted by rev. R. Wiseman and was attended by a large concourse of friends and sympathizers. He was a consistent member of the Orange Order and at the time of his death held the office of secretary of Poplar Lodge, of which lodge along with a number of visiting brethren attended in a body to pay their last respects to a worthy Brother.
He was held in the highest regard by all who knew him, an obliging, sympathetic peace loving neighbour and trusted by all who knew him. He held the office of Secretary Treasurer for Mills School Section for a period extending over fifteen years and was regarded by everyone as a conscientious painstaking public servant.
The sympathy of a wide circle of friends goes out to the widow and her family in their hour of sorrow and bereavement.

Following a period of depression, Johnston Willett, aged 45 years took his own life on Saturday morning on the farm of his mother in Gordon township.
Mr. Willett had suffered recurrences of mental illness throughout his life and had just returned home from treatments to find work on the farm behind schedule owing to his absence, and much to be done. He took pride in the well-kept farm of 180 acres, but the volume of work, coupled with the fact that the early frost had spoiled his corn crop, proved too much for him in his depressed state, and was no doubt the cause of his action. No inquest will be held.
Widespread sympathy is felt for the family in their sorrow.
He is survived by his mother, three sisters and one brother. The funeral was held on Monday, September 24th, with service at his home and interment in Gordon cemetery.

Death of V.C. Wilman
We are indeed sorry to chronicle the passing away of an old resident in the person of Valentine C. Wilman, on March 24th and was laid to rest in Hilly Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Wilman was one of the earliest pioneers on the south side of the Island, having come with his grandparents who were of U.E. Loyalist stock from Pennsylvania, from Quebec in 1873 to Walker’s point on the south shore of the Island where his uncles Christopher and Peter had already established a trading post. They had another at Gore Bay, being among the first white settlers there. Old residents will remember the loss of the “Sea Horse” when both Mr. Wilman’s uncles were drowned, also Mr. Love, Mr. Turly and another. They were on their way to Sarnia with their fish.
Shortly after this Mr. Wilman moved to South Bay Mouth where he resided until his death.
Mr. Wilman was a man of sterling integrity and will long be missed as a good neighbor and a staunch friend, whose word was as good as his bond.
He leaves a wife, five daughters and a son, besides a host of friends to mourn his loss. His youngest son Valentine died in England during the Great War.
Rev. Bradford of Mindemoya assisted by Rev. Pelletier of Manitowaning preached the service which was most comforting and inspiring.
The sorrowing family have the deepest symnathy (sic) of the community in their great loss.

[ANNE ELIZA WILSON]

Mrs. S. Wilson, Pioneer Passes at Spring Bay
Another of Manitoulin's pioneer women died on Saturday, April 5th in the person of Mrs. Samuel Wilson of Providence Bay, Monument in her 87th year. Mrs. Wilson (formerly Anne Eliza Dowsett) came to the Island from the county of Leeds as a bride in 1881, with her husband, Samuel Wilson, who predeceased her in January, 1935.
They settled in a little log house on the farm now owned by their son, Herbert Wilson, on the 12th concession of Campbell township and set to work at clearing the land. In spite of the hardships of those days they prospered and raised a family of six children and built new buildings and extended their property. Later in life before Mr. Wilson's death they built a fine brick house at the Monument where they resided for several years. Mrs. Wilson (better known as Grandma Wilson) was converted shortly after her marriage under the faithful and untiring ministry of Rev. Wm. Schraeder who was the first Mennonite preacher to the Island and now resides in Pontiac, Michigan. She with her husband, joined the Mennonite church here as soon as it was organized in 1887. She remained a faithful member until her death a few days ago.
Her death came as a shock to the Spring Bay and Providence Bay communities because of her being so active in quilting, rug-making and visiting until just two days before the end.
She had attended the church service and received communion the Sunday previous to her death and on the following Thursday night attended the prayer meeting and took an active part as usual. However, on returning to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robt. Clark, she appeared very tired and weak. Shortly after retiring for the night she took very sick at her stomach which was more than her frail body could stand and on Saturday, April 5th she peacefully and quietly slipped away.
Surviving are four sons: Henry of Rouyn, Que., James, William and Herbert of the 12th Con. of Campbell and two daughters, Mrs. Robert Clark of Spring Bay and Mrs. Arthur Hill of Monument. Also she has 22 grandchildren and three great grandchildren besides many other friends and relatives.
Funeral services were conducted from the Robt. Clark home and the Mennonite Church by her pastor Rev. G.W. Johnson.
Interment took place in the Mindemoya Cemetery and six grandsons carried the body to its final resting place. Messrs. Harvey Clark, Burton and Clare Wilson, Herbert Hill, Gordon Clark and Burton Wilson of Rouyn, Que. Mr. A.J. Turner of Gore Bay was funeral director.
