Appreciation
Resident of Foley Township were deeply shocked to hear of the death of Mrs. Roy Woodhouse on Tuesday evening.
Mrs. Woodhouse taught school here for several years at the old No. 2 and recently at the new consolidated school at Otter Lake. Although she was not a resident of this township, she played a very conspicuous part in the community life here, and made a host of friends.
She gave unselfishly of her time and talent to further the interests of our children, and the community in general, and many times appeared on the scene when she did not feel fit. Her passing leaves a gap that will require some time and effort to fill.
We of this township owe a debt of gratitude to her memory and wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to her relatives and friends, who also must feel a great loss.

[CHRISTINA WOODS]
Mrs. Leslie Woods Dies Suddenly
Was Grand Daughter of Wm. Cosby
While driving from her home at Rockville to Sheguiandah on Saturday morning, Mrs. Leslie Woods suddenly died from heart failure. It appears that when going down the hill opposite Moses Burnett’s farm on the town Line, three miles from Sheguiandah village, the tongue of the carriage fell, but Mr. Woods appears to have managed to keep the horses on the road and prevented the usual serious accident for the time being. He got out of the carriage to adjust the harness and put the pole back in its place and while at this Mrs. Woods called for help but before he could get to her she had expired. No doubt death was caused by heart failure from the fright she had received.
The deceased was a daughter of Mr. Chas Cosby, of Green Bay, and a grand daughter of Mr. Wm. Cosby of this place, and a niece of Mrs. Stewart Clarke. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon and was attended by a large number of sympathetic friends and neighbors. Besides her husband she is survived by three little children.

Popular Young Man Passes At Meldrum Bay
On Monday, January 20th, there was held in the United Church, Meldrum
Bay, a funeral service that touched deeply the hearts of a congregation
representative of many parts of the Island. The passing of Allan Wright
cast a shadow over this community, brightened only by the courage and
profound peace with and in which he faced death. Conscious and in
possession of all his faculties up to the moment until his passing; with body and mind tired form a long period of weakness and suffering, Allan could still smile into the face of his pastor and say, ‘Everything is good, there is nothing to fear.’ Speaking from the words,-‘Let not your heart be troubled, ye believe in God,’ the pastor of the church paid a fitting tribute to the courage and patience in suffering of the late Allan Wright, and the perfect final acceptance through faith of the divine will.
Rarely is the passing of a member of any community so universally
regretted. Kindly to everyone, helpful wherever possible, a considerate
and loyal son, he possessed many virtues that would endear him to any
community. The sincere sympathy of all who knew the late Allan Wright
goes out to the father and mother who loved him and are now sustained by the fragrance of his memory.
The late Allan Wright, died at Mindemoya Red Cross Hospital, on
Saturday, January 18th, 1941. The funeral was held from St. Andrew’s
United Church, Meldrum Bay, and interment was made in Meldrum Bay
Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Messrs. Wilber Steele, Archie Wickett,
Neil Prentice, Edward Matheson, Leonard Bailey and Russell VanEvery. Mrs. O.D. Cadotte sang, by request, ‘Beautiful Isle of Somewhere.’
The late Allan Wright is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Granville, Meldrum Bay, and two uncles, Charles and Wellington Burnett,
of Algoma Mills and Windsor, respectively.
Among the floral offerings was a wreath from ‘Father and Mother’, a
basket from the Ladies’ Aid of St. Andrew’s Church, a spray from the

Mrs. Christena Wright
The many friends of Christena Wright of Gore Bay will regret to hear of her death, which occurred at the home of her son, Leonard, on Thursday night, Dec. 9th after a short illness of ten days.

A Sad Fatality, 1908
Seldom, if ever before has the passing of a soul from our midst caused such a cloud of sorrow to settle upon us as in the death of Mr. Dennis Wright which occurred on Saturday afternoon about 5:30 o'clock.
As announced in The Recorder of last week Mr. Wright received the wound which resulted in his death on Wednesday of last week, while working around a lath machine in Brett's mill across the bay. Mr. Wright was shoving a piece of timber through the machine to cut it into lath. In some manner it got lodged in the saw. In trying to get it free one end was raised so that it was caught by the saw and thrown back with terrible force, striking Mr. Wright in the bowels. He was at once placed in a boat and removed to his home where medical aid was secured at once. The extent of the pain suffered by the unfortunate man will never be known, but those who were in attendance during the first day and part of the next, were able to see that he was suffering untold agony. The wound was of an internal nature, and little could be done to relieve the sufferer. Both local doctors were in attendance and all that medical skill could do was done. On the second day the pain abated, but it was seen that death was near at hand. Up to about the last two hours deceased was conscious of all around him, and knew he could not recover. On Saturday at 5:30 he slept peacefully away. So peaceful was his last moments that those around the deathbed scarcely knew the end had come.
Dennis Wright was born in Norfolk Eng., 44 years ago. When a boy of ten years he came with his father and mother to Canada, where they settled in Meaford. When twenty-three years of age he met with an accident which cost him the free use of both hands, and to this fact is no doubt due the accident which resulted in his death. He was out for a days shooting and becoming tired stood to rest for a moment. Placing one hand upon the other he placed them on the muzzle of the gun for support. In some manner the bottom of his trouser leg came in contact with the trigger of the gun, the full charge of both barrels, of a shotgun entering his hands, literally tearing them to pieces. At that time he was confined to his bed for eight weeks, while food was administered with a spoon.
Seventeen years ago he was married to Mary Alice Cutting of Markdale. For several years afterward he lived in Euphrasia Township, Grey County, moving to Gore Bay about eight years ago. During that time he has been very highly thought of and respected by all. He was a man who never shrank from any honest work whereby he could support his wife and family, to whom he was very closely attached. Deceased was never happier than when surrounded by his family of four small children; the eldest being Mable, aged 12 years; Julia, aged 10; Willie aged 5; and Freddie a bright little lad of about 3 years. Besides a widow, and the above mentioned family he leaves a mother and father, highly respected residents of Ice Lake and many sisters and brothers.

been lost on the field of battle. The sad message was received on Monday by Mr. and Mrs. Austin Wright, that their only son Pte. Douglas Rudolph Wright, had been killed in action in Germany on April 20th.
Born on January 21st, 1925, Douglas Wright came with his parents to

year in Toronto. He enlisted in January 1944 after training at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Camp Borden, Woodstock and Barriefield in the Driver Operator’s course he came home for furlough and embarkation leave in November leaving here on the 11th. Impressive Memorial Service Held - 1945
A solemn and impressive memorial service for the late Pte. Douglas Rudolf Wright, son of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Wright, who was killed in action in Germany on April 20, while serving with the Argyle and Sutherland Highland Regiment, was held in All Saints Anglican Church on Sunday evening, May 6.
The altar and chancel were adorned with flowers and a Union Jack under which was concealed the Honour Roll on which the name of Douglas Wright was inscribed.
Members of the Gore Bay High School Canadian Cadet Corps, with their instructor, Mr. S. J. Taylor, paraded to the church and occupied seats to the left of the mourners during the service.
After appropriate hymns, and prayers had been offered, Rev. A. J. Bruce Priest in Charge, addressed the gathering which filled the church to overflowing. He referred to the courage of these young men who had gone forth to battle, and of the pride we should feel in their sacrifice, of the loss of this promising young citizen. All honour is due the memory of those who have laid down their lives in the cause of freedom and justice.
The unveiling of the Honour Roll was then carried out by Jack Brydges, Captain of the Cadet Corps, and the Last Post sounded by “Bugler Blake Smith” with Bugler Douglas Smith following the Reveille.
The singing of “Abide with Me” and the benediction closed the solemn service.

Accidental Death of Herbert Wilson Wright
The sad tidings of the fatal accident which befell Herbert Wilson Wright, son of Mr. W.J. Wright of Poplar, Ontario, which came to hand on Thursday morning, was a great shock to the whole community on Western Manitoulin. At the time of his death, Herbert Wright was engaged in the logging industry in the woods about forty miles north of Blind River where he was fulfilling a contract during the present winter.
It appears that the young man was in the act of placing a log in position on a skidway, when in some manner the hook on the end of the chain became loose and the log rolled backward on him crushing him underneath its weight. Death is reported to have been almost instantaneous.
When the news reached Gore Bay and vicinity, a gloom settled over the
populace, even the school children were not immune from the effect.
The remains arrived in Gore Bay on Thursday evening and were accompanied
thither by his brothers Charles and Robert who were in the woods at the time of the accident.
Circumstances of a particularly sad nature surround the death of Herbert
Wright. He was married to Miss Gwyndolyn Agg, of Whitby in the late summer of the present year, and upon the husband's engagement in the woods, some two months later, Mrs. Wright returned for the winter, to her home, having only enjoyed the companionship of her esteemed husband for a short period and the terrible shock experienced by the young woman can only be imagined, as only those who have suffered a similar affliction can understand the anguish which filled the heart of the bereaved woman.
Another sad feature in this case is the fact that Herbert Wright served
his king and country four years during the great war, engaging in most of the terrible battles in which the Canadians were engaged. Vimy Ridge found him in the thick of the battle from start to finish, coming through the torrent of shot and shell unscathed. He volunteered for a duty that was considered a "forlorn hope" and of a company of some thirty men, two returned to answer the roll call, one a wounded companion and the other Herb Wright. When the echoes of the last gun died away over the ruins of Mons and an armistice was proclaimed, Herb Wright stood upright, unscathed and unafraid, having served his country and king without suffering a wound, in her four years of service. For his gallant conduct he was recommended for the Victoria Cross.
Returning to his native Canada, he immediately set to work and was rapidly reaching a state of comfortable living when his young life was cut short in the Northern woods. Such is the irony of fate.
Herbert Wright, so dauntless in war yet so gentle in peace, has gone to
his reward, but there lingers in our hearts a memory of the gallant deeds of the departed souls, who struggled in Flanders Field, to uphold the .use of humanity, and who today sleeps in a soldiers grave numbered among our best and bravest.
The burial service was conducted in All Saints Church, Gore Bay, on Sunday afternoon and interment took place in Gordon Cemetery. The pall bearers who accompanied the remains to its last resting place were Messrs. Wm. Burns, E.W. Davis, A.O. Hinds, Ted Strain, A. Mastin and Jack McKenzie, all of whom were brothers in arms overseas.
Many beautiful floral tributes were contributed by the local members of
the G.W.V.A. Rev. W.T. Swainson conducted the service.
The large attendance at the burial service is evidence of the esteem in
which the deceased was held.
The family were all present except Miss Alice Wright of New York. To the
bereaved young wife, to the devoted father and mother, sisters and brothers, we offer our condolence in their hour of trial and bereavement.

Obituary
R.L. Wyman
R.L. Wyman one of the Manitoulin’s most respected and honoured pioneer citizens at the age of 87 years eight months and four days very peacefully passed away on Dec. 13th, 1920, at the home of his daughter Mrs. Mary Nelder, Howland Township.
The deceased was born at Whitby April 17th, 1833 and was married to Rachel Ellis in the year 1856. They lived in the township of Scott until the year 1874 when with their family moved to the Manitoulin and settled near Kagawong in the pioneer days of Indians, forests and hardships.
He followed his trade as a farmer and carpenter. He was always known as a willing and efficient tradesman who loved his work for the joy of seeing it done well. He built his last barn for his son-in-law Thos. Nelder at the age of 79 years, when in his pride and love for his work, he mounted the great high structure of frame work and proudly walked the main plate.
As he began to fail in health he longed to see his loved ones once again which resulted in a home gathering being planed (sic).
In August 1919 all the family with the exception of one daughter, Mrs. Chas. Hennessy, Vancouver, gathered at the home of Mrs. Nelder and spent a very happy family reunion, picnics, excursions, boating and driving. All the most joyous times of the season were indulged in.
Those present were, Mrs. Geo. Kendrick and daughter Patricia, Vancouver, Mrs. Kribs and granddaughter Harriet Kribs, Sturgis Michigan, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Forshew Loring, Parry Sound, Mrs. G.A. Buck Sault Ste. Marie, R.L. Wyman Thessalon, D. Wyman, Mindemoya and Geo. Wyman, Spring Bay.
A photo was taken of the happy family and final farewells of a much loved and respected father.
For many years he has been an ardent Christian worker and also a member of the Kagawong Orange Lodge and a kind and effectionate (sic) father.
Under the direction of the Little Current L.O. L. a large gathering assembled at the home Monday evening and a very appropriate service was conducted by Rev. S. Greenslade using for the key note, “The Builder”.
The following morning the remains were conveyed by motor to Kagawong to a distance of twenty miles where they were met by the Kagawong L.O.L. and conducted to the church which had been beautifully decorated for the occasion and a large gathering of old time neighbours and friends were in waiting.
After the funeral services which were conducted by Rev. J. McLaughlin, the remains were laid to rest in the Kagawong cemetery beside his beloved wife who passed away in the year 1887.
He is not dead but sleeping,
To wake on that golden shore,
With friends in the Master’s keeping.
Where parting shall be no more.
