AARON STRINGER, the first tax collector of Crowland, was born in PA,
USA, Nov 30 1768 and died at Pelham, Ontario Sept. 19 1838. His wife,
ELIZABETH NEWBERRY, born Sept. 1 1771 died Oct. 11 1851. Their chiildren
were born in Crowland, Township on Lot 6 con. 4 Crown Grant at Lyons Creek.,
later the VANALSTINE place. They lived here for 10 years. The STRINGER
children were , William, John, James, Catherine, and Mary.
When Elizabeth NEWBERRY was six years old, she was captured by the Indians
and kept captive until she was 17. Her parents pleaded with the Indians
to return her, and they did bring her to see them several times. Finally,
after much coaxing, they allowed her to stay overnight. Her parents hid
her in the barn under the hay and so she escaped. She used to tell her
children of feeling the Indians tramping over her while she lay under
the hay as they searched for her. Her daughter, Mary Stringer remembered
the War of 1812 well. In October, 1814, the day after the Battle of Cooks
Mills, she and her brother came from Pelham and looked at the battlefields.
They crossed the Chippawa River at MISENERS bridge. A few hours
later all the bridges over the Chippawa were burned, and she and her brother
were forced to cross in a small boat, with their horses swimming behind
them.
Mary STRINGER, was born in 1801, in June 1817, she married ALEXANDER
McKENNY, they lived in Pelham for 3 years before returning to Crowland
and her fathers homestead. Here Alex built and operated a blacksmith shop
for a few years , they then went to South Crowland, and built a shop on
Streets Road, near the springs. Mary McKenney was always a good equestrian
and often took grain to the mill on horseback, many times taking one of
her children with her. Even when she was very old, she would ride into
the marshes and gather rice straw to make hats for the boys in the neighborhood.
Alexander McKenny was the son of ROBERT McKINNEY, who came to the US from
Scotland as a stowaway at the age of 11 He lived in the US until he was
married, some of his children were born US, some in Pelham. The children
were, NICHOLAS, CHRISTIAN, JOHN, ANDREW, ROBERT, SARAH, AND ALEXANDER,
all McKINNEY.
