Republican Nominee Has Bay of Quinte Cousins |
|
NAPANEE - George Herbert Bush, forty-first President of the United States and U.S. Naval war hero, is a 10th great-grandson of Francis Cooke of the Mayflower.
Through Francis Cooke's grand-daughter, Elizabeth Mitchell and her husband, John Washburn, many sons and daughters of Bay of Quinte pioneers are cousins of the Bush family. The Bushes have been a political dynasty for over half a century. The President's father, Prescott Sheldon Bush, of Connecticut, was a U.S. Senator from 1952 to 1963. Politics is nothing new to the Washburn descendants. Ebenezer Washburn U.E., a sergeant in the Loyal Rangers, was a businessman and politician of reknown in Prince Edward county. His son, Simeon, was a Member of Parliament and Judge. In 1835, Ebenezer's sixth son, Simon was a Colonel with the 2nd Regiment of West York militia. In 1829 he had been a made a bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada. Ebenezer's sister, Jemimia Gary Perry, was the progenitor of many Ernesttown politicians and early Methodist preachers. She married Corp. Robert Perry of the Loyal Rangers in 1771. Jemima removed with her young family to Quebec after Burgoyne's surrender in 1777. There they stayed until in 1784 a portion of Jessup's Loyal Rangers removed to 2nd Town (Ernesttown) on the Bay of Quinte.
