Genealogical Sources for the Town of Sioux Lookout

If you are looking for information about ancestors who lived in Sioux Lookout, the following sources may give you the answers that you are looking for.

Archives of Ontario (AO)
Have microfilm which is available through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) which provide the records for: births 1869-1901, marriages 1869-1916, and deaths 1869-1926; courts; and land.

For all the vital statistical records you must check the microfilm listing in the AO ILL Catalogue in the indexes first, for the year in which the event occurred, to get the number of the actual registration. You then order the microfilm, which applies, to that number. There are certain marriage license books for the Kenora District on MS945 Reel 6 Book 4 for 1909 and MS945 Reel 11 Book 4 for 1910 from the AO.

Land Records are documents used in the granting of Crown Lands. The index to Land Patents by name from 1826-1912 is found in RG53 series 56, Reels 7-12 of the AO.

Cemetery Records

Some for the Kenora District are found on MS451 Reel 69 and for the Drayton Township on MS451 Reel 54 from the AO. The Sioux Lookout Genealogical Society transcribed the Northways Cemetery in 1984 and 1985. This was updated in 1999 when they did the Hillcrest and Evergreen Cemeteries as well. These books can be found in our local library in the genealogy cupboards.

The Public Works Office of the town holds all their available cemetery records. A fire in June 1941 destroyed the earlier ones. These are computerized.

Census Records

The microfilm reel T-6458 1901 for Algoma may contain some information of very early settlers in this area. This reel has been indexed by Art Gunnell and can be found in the genealogy cupboards.

Church Records

A few, with their year of formation, who may have records of baptisms, marriages, funerals and members are: St. Mary's Anglican 1910; St. Andrew's United 1912; Sacred Heart Catholic 1913; Calvary Baptist 1925.

Electoral Records

Records of the Chief Electoral Officer for Canada (Record Group 113) include lists of voters prepared during the federal election years since 1935. These are available on microfilm from the Public Archives of Canada (P.A.C.)

Funeral Records

The Sioux Lookout Funeral Home has records available since 1962 although the information contained in them is sometimes quite scarce. If there was an obituary written then they should have it. These could give details on the deceased's family.

Hudson Bay Company Archives

They are at 200 Vaughan St. Winnipeg, MB R3C 1T5 phone fax and contain texts, photos, maps, films etc. about all areas that the Hudson Bay Company served, including our Lac Seul area.

Indian Affairs Records

Treaty annuity pay lists up to 1885 in RG 10 (Indian Affairs) of the National Archives are open for consultation. Later pay lists and other records of genealogical value are found in both RG 10 and RG 85 (Northern Affairs). These are subject to restrictions of the "Access to Information and Privacy Acts" through the Indian Affairs office in Sioux Lookout.
