Stormont County was established in 1792, one of the original nineteen counties. It was named for Viscount Stormont of Perth, Scotland - David Murray.
The first settlers were United Empire Loyalists, "disbandees of 1st Battallion King's Royal Regiment of New York, 2nd Battallion King's Royal Regiment of New York and 1st Battallion Royal Highland Emigrants.", who arrived in 1783. "The lots in [southern] Stormont were granted mainly to families of Palatine German and Presbyterian Scots descent."
Settlers continued to arrive in great numbers, mostly from Scotland. In the early 1800's the northern townships were settled by Scottish emigrants.
Stormont County is located in South-Eastern Ontario.
- 1792-1849 - part of Eastern District
- 1850-present - Part of the municipality of the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry"
