ANDERSON, Matthew
, was b. in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scot., and was a school
mate with Dr. David Livingston, the African explorer. He came to Canada in
1841, and started a blacksmith's shop in Fergus soon after. In 1843 he
purchased a farm of 200 acres in West Garafraxa, and operated it in
conjunction with his shop of many years. He is a Conservative and has always
taken an active part in politics, even before Confederation. He was Reeve of
Fergus ten years, and of W. Garafraxa one year. In church affiliation he is a
Presbyterian. He m. Margaret Kilpatrick, of Fergus, in 1844. Issue: Mrs. J.
Munroe, Fergus; James, Fergus; Thomas, Toronto; John, B.C.; and David.
David was b. Fergus, 1858, and in 1881 set. on the homestead, lot 5, conc. 2, W. Garafraxa, where he carried on the farm of 200 acres. He is a Methodist and in politics an active Conservative, and has been a Councillor for three years. He m. Martha Robinson, of W. Garafraxa, in 1879.
