COWAN, James, Sr.
(d.), b. Selkirk, Scot., 1790, where he was raised and m. Margaret Nichol.
They came to Galt in 1829, when this place was then a hamlet. They set. near
Galt and became prosperous, owning at the time of his death in 1867, 235 acres
of land. He d. there, as did his wife, in 1883, age 92. Thomas Cowan, their
youngest son, owns and lives in the old homestead.
James Cowan, Jr., whose portrait appears on another page of this work; was b. Selkirk, Scot., 1825, and was only four years old when he came to Galt with his parents. He was raised and educated in Galt. In 1850 he m. Jane Beattie, who d. 1888, age 59 years. They came to Guelph Tp. in 1851 and he purchased 150 acres of land on the "West End Road," and there settled. Eighty acres of this farm had been cleared, and Mr. Cowan cleared the balance, and later purchased an additional 50 acres. He has always occupied a very high place in the community, being a man of more than ordinary ability, well informed, progressive and enterprising. He has made a specialty of registered thoroughbred cattle, Clydesdale horses and Yorkshire pigs. He started life with little. His farm and improvements are of the best in the township, and his intelligent and well directed efforts have brought him success. He has two sons, James and William. James, m. Rachel Owens, and resides on his farm of 121 acres, lots 3 and 4, con. 1 B., Guelph Tp. Issue: Minnie and Lillie. William, m. Mary A. North, and manages the old homestead, lots 23, 24, 25 and 26, con. 5, "West End Road." Issue: James B., George W. and Ella J.
