144 NICKEL, GOERSAN
I work at Dover Cliffs Long Term Care Centre in Ontario. A resident that lived here for 15 years passed away yesterday, Irene Margaret Nickel. She was mentally handicapped, and was "left here" with no Power of Attorney, no family records. We, the staff are hoping to either bury her beside her parents or at least have their names to put on the headstone. All we know is that her parents last names were Nickel (her mothers maidan name was Goersan), and we suspect (through her talking) that her parents names were Gertrude and Clayton. Unfortunately those firt names are only speculated and S>I>N registry has not been much help (confidentiality reasons). Please help me to start to look for funeral homes, cemetaries, etc to find her parents. Thanks, Heather Sheppard    Posted on Tue Aug 1 14:28:12 2006

150 HOWARD , BARRETT
I am researching the family of James & Elizabeth (Watling) HOWARD that lived in Guelph from the 1830 or 40's on. A daughter, Sarah Ann HOWARD, is my maternal gg grandmother. James, a brother of Sarah, was a barber and married Mary Jane BARRETT from Pilkington Twp on Jul 26 1876. James & Mary Jane had 5 children: Minnie Elizabeth (b Feb 18 1878), Cecilia Mabel (b Jul 3 1880), Gusty Norton (a girl, b Aug 5 1882), Charles James (b May 11, 1886) & Elsie May (b Jan 23 1890). According to the 1891 Canada Census, the family lived in Guelph. My problem is that I have found no indication of any family member in either the 1901 or 1911 Canada Census. A search of both marriage & death indices from 1891 onwards draws a blank as well. I would appreciate hearing from anyone having information about this family. Thanks, Dave Thomas :)    Posted on Sat Sep 30 18:28:50 2006

I am trying to find information on my great grandparents. My Gr.Grandmother was Elizabeth Mary Louise Schmidt. I am told she resided in Guelph, both her parents were from Germany and married in Ontario. My Gr. Grandfather Ernest Nathaniel Sheffield was of African heritage (Parents unknown), tho we were told he was raised by his mother and aunt Jane. I was however unaware of his African lineage until just this week, when I stumbled upon it through Ancestry.ca. I am told that they met at the King Edward hotel where they both worked, he was a cook. They married in Kitchener 14 June 1908. His religion was Methodist and hers was Roman Catholic. From there they moved to Sarnia.     Posted on Fri Feb 24 13:56:30 2012

POWRIE, MCPHAIL     mary powrie schacht
I found a pay sheet transcribed in "Fergus, the Story of a Small Town" for the 1837 Gore District Militia listing my great grandfather Robert Pourie (current spelling Powrie), but the original was in the hands of Lt. Valentine's family. I've long looked for other records, traveling even to the Canadian National Library. Anyone else run across these records or know where that original pay sheet is currently. It is my only proof when my ancestor came to Canada from Scotland, so I give an arm to have a copy or find something like the muster sheets, which I pray may have age at enlistment. There were 9 Robert Powries born within 5 years, and I think I know which one is mine, but it would be incredible after 30 years to find proof.    Posted on Tue Jun 5 19:07:34 2012
