| The York Region
Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society (OGS) started as the York Region Group in May
1992, a project of the Toronto
Branch, OGS (that formerly covered the whole of York County). This group was
established in order to accommodate members of the Toronto Branch who were finding it
difficult to travel to downtown Toronto for meetings, as well as those residing in York
Region. The group hosted two well-attended genealogy workshops in Nov 1993, and Nov 1995. In 1993 the York Region Group published "Resources for Genealogy in York Region", a book compiled by Ruth Burkholder with help from the York Region Group members. Then in 1996 the group assisted Norm Jolly with the compilation and publication of his book "York County Men and Women Who Gave Their Lives in World War I, Vol. 1; York County Ontario (excluding the City of Toronto)". In 1996 the "Register of Names Being Researched" was printed, and the first issue of a newsletter "York Region Ancestors" was published in February 1996. The indexing of the library material was completed in 1996, and the holdings became accessible at their home in the Richmond Hill Central Library. In June 1997, the Board of Directors of OGS approved the petition for branch status, and York Region became the 29th Branch of the OGS. In April 2000 the branch hosted the OGS Region V Colloquium 2000.
