York Research Resources is a compilation of online references, books, articles, and useful addresses to assist with research in York Region. Books can be located using your favourite online library catalogue search, borrowed through interlibrary loan, or purchased directly from the publishers.

  • Ancestors Search Online New
    Developed by LAC and hosted within the Canadian Genealogy Centre combines 18 genealogical databases into one search.
  • That's My Family Online New
  • A search tool that leads to genealogy and family history databases hosted by federal, provincial or territorial archives centres. It was launched and is maintained by Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec in partnership with Library and Archives Canada and supported by the Council of Provincial and Territorial Archivists of Canada.
  • Canadian Genealogy Centre  Online Updated
    The National Archives of Canada and the National Library of Canada have created a single window that provides electronic access to the genealogical resources of Canada.
  • Library and Archives Canada Online Updated
    Library and Archives Canada collects and preserves Canada's documentary heritage, and makes it accessible to all Canadians. This heritage includes publications, archival records, sound and audio-visual materials, photographs, artworks, and electronic documents such as websites.
  • Archives of Ontario Online Updated
    Information on getting started in genealogical research; microfilm interloan service; major genealogical holding that include aboriginal records, census records, vital statistics, land records, maps and atlases, municipal records, court records, private manuscripts and collections and newspaper collections; a guide for researchers; and vital statistics. Search the collections: three databases are available for archival records, images and library holdings.
  • York Region OGS, Branch Library  Online Updated
    Housed at the Richmond Hill Public Library, the collection includes references, indexes, histories, genealogies, transcriptions, registers, lineages, newsletters and journals, church registers, cemetery transcriptions and more. The book collection is accessible by searching the RHPL Library Catalogue. Call numbers end in "OGS". and the material is shelved in a separate area facing the east wall. 
  • Ontario Genealogical Society Catalogue Online
    Contains the holdings of the Ontario Genealogical Society Provincial Library located at the Canadiana Collection, North York Public Library, Toronto.
  • Quaker Archives and Library of Canada Online  
    The Quaker Archives and Library of Canada has two parts: The Canadian Yearly Meeting Archives and The Arthur Garratt Dorland Reference Library. Three indexes are available online: the Canadian Quaker Genealogical Index; the Dorland Reference Library Catalogue and the Canadian Yearly Meeting Archives.
  • ARCHEION, Ontario's Archival Information Network Online  
    An online catalogue of descriptions of records (textual and media) located in archives across Ontario. Search ARCHEION for information on what archives exist and where the archival records are located. Included are descriptions of all types of holdings, including but not limited to documentary heritage, diaries, personal accounts, maps, films, photographs, administrative and genealogical records. Visit the ARCHEION Virtual Exhibit and experience just a sample of the rich documentary heritage found in archives across Ontario. 
  • Archives Canada, Canadian Archival Information Network Online  
    Archives Canada is a gateway to archival resources found in over 800 repositories across Canada. Through Archives Canada you can: search archival holdings across Canada; access Provincial and Territorial Archival Networks; view digitized photographs, maps, documents and online exhibits developed around Canada's history; and find contact information for repositories where these resources are held. Archival descriptions and digitized products are added regularly.

    The Society for the Preservation of Historic Thornhill (SPOHT) established the Thornhill Archives & Special Collections in 2001.

  • Aurora Public Library Online
    APL has a number of resources available for individuals conducting research in local history and genealogy. The library also has The Banner from 1877-present, and other local newspapers, in microform.
  • Aurora Heritage Centre Online  
    The Aurora Heritage Centre is a project of the Aurora Historical Society that opened in the early summer of 2006. This dynamic, multi-use facility, provides a focal point for social and cultural events and is located in the 1886 provincially recognized historic site known locally as ‘Church Street School.’ The Centre is home to collections of historical artifacts and archival documents covering the range of the town's history in the 19th and 20th centuries. 
  • The Hillary House Koffler Museum of Medicine, Aurora Online  
    Built in 1862, Hillary House is recognized by the National Historic Sites and Monuments Board as one of Canada’s best examples of Gothic Revival architecture. It contains a significant collection of medical instruments, books, papers, household furnishings, and equipment dating from the early nineteenth to the late twentieth century and is open to the public as Hillary House, the Koffler Museum of Medicine.
  • Canadiana Collection at the North York Public Library Online
    The Canadiana Collection, has an emphasis is on local history and genealogy. It also houses the holdings of the Ontario Genealogical Society, Canadian Society of Mayflower Descendants, Jewish Genealogical Society of Canada (Toronto Division), and the York Pioneer & Historical Society.  Online catalogue.
  • East Gwillimbury Public Library Online
    The reference collection at the library includes information on local history and genealogy. In addition, the library can borrow materials for patrons from other libraries through the interlibrary loan network, including genealogical information from the National Archives and the Archives of Ontario.
  • Sharon Temple, National Historic Site and Museum Online
    In the 1820s, a small idealistic community fashioned a dramatic architectural testament to its vision. The Temple of the Children of Peace at Sharon is now a national historic site.
  • Georgina Pioneer Village & Archives Online  
    This site includes a brief description of the archives holdings, as well as hours of operation, museum admission fees, archival research fees, lists of museum events and workshops, online newsletter and contact information.

  • King Township Public Library Online
    The King, Nobleton, and Schomberg branches of KTPL offer our patrons a wide selection of local history and genealogy resources that include local histories, genealogies, scrapbooks, birth, marriage and death indexes, microfilms, and Women's Institute resources.
  • Markham Museum  Online
    This local repository maintains a collection of resources for the genealogist, including census returns, assessment rolls, deed abstracts, newspapers, memorial inscriptions, diaries, ledgers, deeds, registers, correspondence and photographs. Published genealogical records, local histories, family research files and finding aids are also available for the use of researchers.
  • Markham Public Libraries Online
    The John Lunau Heritage Research Centre is a small, evolving local history collection, focusing on the history of the Town of Markham, as embodied in print, manuscripts, maps, and photographs.
  • Newmarket Public Library Online
    The Newmarket library maintains both a local history and a Canadiana collection that includes an index of the Newmarket Era, cemetery listings for most of York Region, census material for York County, and a Newmarket pamphlet file.
  • Elman W. Campbell Museum, Newmarket Online
    Located in Newmarket, the museum has a collection of many artifacts specific to Newmarket, and houses the Newmarket Historical Society Archives.
  • Richmond Hill Public Library Online
    Resources in the Local History & Genealogy include the Helen Schwab Collection (genealogical data on founding families of York, Durham and Peel Regions); Family Search databases; census returns; birth, marriage and death records; a local history database (indexes of local newspapers, both past and present); and the holdings of the York Region Branch OGS library.   • Richmond Hill Heritage Centre Online
    Set in picturesque Amos Wright Park, the centre is an 1840's Regency style cottage, fully restored to reflect this historical period.
