This database at the Archives of Ontario is an index to the 5184 case
files that document claims made to the second Heir and Devisee
Commission.

to Upper Canada Records
Upper Canada Genealogy includes an online index to the Upper
Canada Sundries. Also known as the correspondence of the civil
secretary, they include petitions for land, requests for government
jobs, military communications, requests for compensation due to war
losses, lists of people wanting to settle in Upper Canada, testimonies
regarding traitors in the war of 1812 and the rebellion of 1837/8,
complaints about unfulfilled promises of assistance, petitions for
clemency for neighbours convicted of treason and murder, and many other
matters.

Many early settlers, both military and civilian, submitted petitions to the governor in
order to obtain Crown land. The petitions often provide genealogical information such as
country of origin and military service.
