York Research Resources is a compilation of online references, books, articles, and useful addresses to assist with research in York Region. Books can be located using your favourite online library catalogue search, borrowed through interlibrary loan, or purchased directly from the publishers.

• Toronto Public Library Digital Collections  
  The Toronto Public Library Digital Collections website brings together a variety of primary and secondary source materials from the Library’s collections. The site now consists of a suite of databases of digitized images and several text only databases are also provided. These searchable databases include: York & Toronto City Directories (1833-1881), York Minutes 1797-1823, Atlas Books, Local History Books, Maps, Pictures, Postcards and Souvenir Pictures.

The Atlas belongs to all Canadians and reflects the incredible social, environmental and economic diversity of our country.   This map has been developed using Macromedia Flash technology. This allows the user to zoom in a particular area up to 600% of the original size while also allowing the user to pan North, South, East and West.
• Index to Whitchurch Township and Stouffville Village Residents 1837-1901, and 1901 Census Index
  compiled by Ruth Burkholder (Stouffville, Ontario: RMB Services). This is a Head of Household and Strays index to the residents of Whitchurch township and Stouffville village in York County, Ontario. It includes, in separate indexes, Walton's 1837 Directory; Brown's 1846-7 Directory; Rowsell's 1850-1 Directory; and the federal census for 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. The index gives the surname, first name, and age of the person, and the section and page where they are listed in the census.

• Smith's Canadian Gazetteer (Ontario, 1846)
  by Wm. H. Smith (Toronto: H. & W. Rowsell, 1846). Coles Canadiana Collection. Statistical and general information about Canada West, including a map, descriptions of all principal towns and villages, magistrates, post offices, stage and steamboat fares, hotels and taverns, toll rates, land agents and a "mass of other desirable and useful information for the man of business, traveller, or emigrant".

• Lovell's Canadian Dominion Directory for 1871
  (Montreal: J. Lovell, 1871). Contains names of professional and business men, and other inhabitants, of the cities, towns and villages.
• Lovell's 1873 Gazetteer of British North America
  (Montreal: John Lovell, 1873). Facsimile reprint by Global Heritage Press. Contains over six thousand descriptions and historical facts about cities, towns and villages across Canada, as they were known in 1873. Also included is a listing of over fifteen hundred lakes and rivers with their location, size and general information.
• Illustrated Historical Atlas of the County of York: and the Township of West Gwillimbury...
  compiled by Miles & Co., Toronto, 1878 (Belleville, Ont.: Mika Silk Screening, 1972). Includes history of the county, biographical sketches of early settlers and residents, business directories, many dates of settlement of settlers. Detailed maps of townships with concession and lot numbers, including many of the names of land owners and occupants at time of publication are listed.
