Duniway

National Society Daughters of the American Revolution
Stayton, Oregon

We formed, and rather quickly, because there was local interest, which grew out of a car pool..........Three of us were driving into Keizer for meetings, about 20 miles away. Now that we have a local chapter, we hope to continue to attract members from many of the small towns and communities surrounding Stayton. We currently have members who live in Jefferson, Scio, Stayton, Silverton, Aumsville, and Sublimity.

We chose to honor Abigail Scott Duniway, by naming our chapter for her, because she came to Oregon in 1852 with her husband, and because she was a remarkable woman, born well ahead of her time. She wrote the first novel that was commercially published in Oregon, she was a newspaper editor, and she became the first woman in Oregon to register to vote in a national election. Her 42 years of devoted work as a suffragist resulted in Oregon becoming the seventh state to allow women the right to vote, eight years before the passing of the 19th amendment.

We may be small, but we're growing. We meet in Stayton, at 10:00 a.m., once a month. Our meetings are usually on the first Monday of the month, September to June. When the first Monday of the month is a holiday, we meet the second Monday of the month. So far, September is our only exception: We meet the second Monday in September.  Visitors and prospective members are most welcome. Contact our Chapter Regent, Judy Gardner , if you would like to attend a meeting or need further information about our chapter or DAR. Now, to get to know us a little, please come meet our Chapter Officers.
