The Bend Chapter placed first in the Northwest Division in the category of Cultural Events and Traditions. This division comprises of the states of CA, WA, OR, ID, NV, and AK.

Jo Kifer, chapter chairman of the DAR Veterans Committee and committee members Virginia Pyka, Marilyn Jole-Spiegel and Barbara Anderson interviewed nearly two dozen veterans, mostly from WWII. The transcription and tapes were sent to the Library of Congress who is collecting these stories. The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress is creating a searchable, national catalog of these oral histories. This registry will be on the Library of Congress web site so anyone can hear or read a veteran's story.

Some of these transcriptions and tapes were entered into the American Heritage, Cultural Events and Traditions, contest sponsored by DAR. As a result of our winning the division, our entries will go to National to be judged.

The chapter member who have participated in the interviews or transcriptions say it makes them proud of the brave people who have and are defending our country. "We tend to think of our military as an impersonal entity unto itself, but it is made of individuals, each with a story to tell."
