The MONROE CEMETERY is located on the west side of Highway 99W, approximately three fourths of a mile north of the town of Monroe on the slope of a low hill.
This cemetery is on the original donation land claim of Roland and Elizabeth Hinton, who settled here in 1847. Like most of the early cemeteries, it began as a family burying ground. The oldest marked grave (1850) is that of one of the Hinton children. Elizabeth Hinton was buried here in 1860. Also among the older burials are Nancy, wife of Aaron Richardson, (1862); James Murray (1794 - 1862); Robert Herron (1821 - 1855); George Carson (1808 - 1869); and Augustus Honig (1826 - 1855). Another early marker reads "Claborn W. Wild -- drowned -- Feb. 14, 1857 -- aged 33 years". It is said that he drowned in the Long Tom river -- a stranger whose people were unkown. There are no markers for any of the burials in what is called "Potters Field".
The Monroe Cemetery Association was officially formed in 1889. However, the Original Record Book of the Association shows the first meeting was held November 24, 1888. Those in attendance were Wm. D. Barclay, Robert Brown, Wm. Bundy, Jas. M. Heron, Thos. D. Hinton, Wm. H. Levaugh, James Martin, Sam Rickard, and G. R. Taylor. Elected as trustees were: Wm. Garlinghouse, John Rickard, Hugh Herron (Chairman) and Wm. J. Kelly (Clerk). On Dec. 7, 1889 the Trustees and others subscribed $130, which was used as follows: $125 for the purchase of five acres from Susan and Samuel Stamms, $2.50 to record the Articles of Incorporation, fifty cents for books and postage, leaving a balance of $2.
