1940 Oregon census indexing project.

Sue LeBlanc is the GCO coordinator for the 1940 census indexing project. The 3.8 million images were released by the National Archives on April 2nd, 2012. However, those images do not have a name index. A community of volunteers is indexing the census, and it will be made available for free.

The Oregon census images are easy-to-read, and the census indexing is relatively easy. As one new indexer stated, “You can’t make a mistake.”

Michael J. Hall, Deputy Genealogical Officer for FamilySearch, will be one of the speakers at the GCO conference on July 28th, 2012 in Eugene. It would be exciting if all of Oregon was indexed by that time.

To sign up to index, and to get personalized help in starting the process, contact Sue LeBlanc dsleblanc@aol.com. Let’s make a difference.
