Samuel Y. Cook b. 1823 Tennessee, came to Oregon with the
early pioneers and is recorded as being there
as of 1846.
In 1848 he married Martha Ann, she was born
in 1833 in Oregon, I do not know her maiden
name, nor her parents. According to Oregon
State Archives, Samuel Y. Cook was on the
census and tax rolls, of the Provisional
and Territorial, at Yamhill Co. He has a
land claim dated 1-7-1847, at Lewis Co.,
OR. Territory. This area later became Lewis
In the 1850 census at Yamhill Co. OR he is
listed with his wife Martha Ann and their
daughter Lucinda Cook b. 1849 Oregon Territory.
Dated 11-1-1861, a divorce case at Yamhill
Co., Martha Cook vs. S.Y. Cook. However,
they may not have completed the divorse,
as I later find a land documant dated 12-14-1866,
Yamhill Co., 643.85 acres, and both names
appear of the land record.
Sam Y. Cook was a Private, in the Second
Company of the Oregon Rifles. His commanding
officer was Capt. Lawrence Hall. This was
during the Oregon Indian Wars.
In the 1870 census at Weston, Umatilla Co.,
Samuel Cook is listed as a farm laborer,
and living alone.
In the 1880 census he is listed at La Grande,
Union Co OR, and he has a new wife named
Elizabeth Brower b. 1840 MO, d/o Jeremiah
Brower and Nancy Weaver Swindle.
Their children are:
1. Albert Cook b. 1872 OR
2. Franklin Cook b. 1873 OR
3. Mary Cook b. 1875 OR
4. Martha Cook b. 1-21-1877 La Grande, OR.
Married Charles Oliver. Died: 1942 and is
buried at Summerville Cemetery, Summerville,
OR. Children are: Mark, George, Charles,
Athol, Vernon, Bonnie, and Arnold Oliver.
5. William S. Cook b. 1878, as of the 1920
census living at Falls City, Polk Co., OR.
Married Rose, children are Harold, Albert
and Rouall Cook.
6. Chancey J. Cook b. 1882 OR, as of 1920
living at Portland, OR, single, working in
a confectionary factory.
As of 1942 living at Pendelton, OR. Samuel
Y. Cook was still alive in 1901, when he
had a land record at La Grande, Union Co.,
OR for 120 acres on the Willamette Meridian.
I believe as of 1895, Elizabeth Brower Cook
may have died, as her 2 youngest kids, William
Cook and Chancey Cook , were both placed
with relatives permanently to live.
