Directory of Churches

Baptist Church—Corner Fourth and Alder, Rev. A. R. Medbury, Pastor. Preaching on Sabbath at 11 o'clock a.m. and at 7:45 p.m. Prayer  meeting on Thursday evening of each week at 8 o'clock. Sabbath School at 12:30, Sunday, immediately after the morning preaching.  Seats free.

Catholic Church—Corner Third and Stark. Very Rev. J. F. Fierens, Pastor, and Rev. Louis Verhaag, Assistant. Low Masses on Sundays at 6:30 and 8 o'clock, and High Mass at 10:30 o'clock a.m. Vespers at 7 o'clock in the evening. Masses on week days at 6, 6:30 and 7  o'clock a.m. Sunday School at 3 p.m.

Chapel of St. Mary's Academy—Corner Market and Fifth. Mass on Sundays at 8 o'clock a.m., and Vespers at 3 o'clock p.m.

Congregational Church, East Portland—Service at the School House in the McMillen District, at 11 a.m. Sunday School at 12:15.

Episcopal Mission Chapel—Corner First and Caruthers. Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. Service every Sunday at 7 p.m.

First Presbyterian Church—Corner Washington and Third, Rev. Dr. Lindsley, Pastor, residence corner Morrison and Ninth. Sabbath service at 11 a.m. and 7:45 p.m. Sabbath School and Bible Class at 12:30, Prayer meeting at 6:45 p.m. Lecture Thursday evening at 7:45. Gentlemen will be in attendance to conduct strangers and visitors to seats. Services in the German language every alternate Sabbath.

First Congregational Church—Corner Second and Jefferson. Services in the morning conducted by the Pastor. In the evening will be held the usual Sunday School Concert, with general and special  recitations, a reading, an address and music. The pews are not rented.

Hall St. M. E. Church—Corner Hall and Sixth, Rev. T. F. Royal, Pastor. Services at 11 a. m. And 7:30 p.m. Sunday School at 9 a.m. Prayer meeting every Thursday evening.

Methodist Episcopal Church—Corner of Taylor and Third, Rev. Geo. W. Izer, Pastor. Preaching services in the morning at 11 o'clock; in the evening, from April to July, at 7:45, August to November, 7:30; December to March, 7. Communion service the first Sabbath in each month. Prayer meeting Sabbath evening, one hour before preaching; young people's prayer meeting, Wednesday evening; regular weekly prayer meeting on Thursday evening, and general experience meeting the first Thursday evening in each month, all at same hour as preaching service. Noon meetings daily. Sunday School at 2 p.m.; Chinese Sunday School at 3:30; Sunday School Missionary  Concert on first Sunday in each month, at 2 p.m. Strangers are cordially invited. Pews free.

North Portland M. E. Sunday School—Corner of Ninth and D, every Sunday at 9 a.m.

East Portland M. E. Church—Rev. N. Doane, Pastor. Service at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Prayer meeting Thursday at 7 p.m.

Plymouth Congregational Church—Corner North Fourteenth and E. There will be preaching at this church at 3:30 p.m., by the Rev. J. D. Eaton. Those who reside in the immediate vicinity are specially invited to attend.

St. David's Church, East Portland—Services at 11 o'clock a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sunday School at 9:30 a.m.

Plymouth Church—Corner of E and Fourteenth streets. Sabbath School at 3 p.m.

St. Stephen's Chapel—Cor. Madison and Fourth—Rev. John Rosenberg, Pastor. Services at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday School immediately after morning service.

Scandinavian Evangelical Lutheran Church—East Portland—A. E. Fredrichsen, Pastor. Religious services in the English language at 2 p.m. In the Norwegian language when required and noticed. 

Trinity Church—Corner Oak and Sixth—Services Sunday at 11 a.m. and  7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Friday and all Holy days at 10 a.m. Friday evening with lecture at 7:30. The seats all free at the evening services. The Sunday School meets in the S. S. Chapel on Fifth Street at 9:45. Rev. Geo. Burton, Rector—residence Fourth Street, between F and G. The Rector may be seen at the Church every day from 12:30 to 1:30. Evening prayer with lecture Friday at 7 p.m. Evening service and sermon in German language, on the first Sunday of every month.

Unitarian Chapel—Corner Yamhill and Seventh—Rev. T. L. Eliot, Pastor Regular services every Sabbath at 11 a.m. and 7:45 p.m.  Sunday School at 12:15. The evening service is omitted on the first Sunday of every month. The communion service is at 3:30 p.m on said day. Pastor's residence—Salmon Street, between Fifth and Sixth.

Zion A. M. E. Church—North Third, bet B and C—A. B. Smith, Pastor. Services every Sunday at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday Se'l at 2 p.m.

Synagogue Beth Israel—Corner Oak and Fifty—Divine Services Saturday at half-past 9 o'clock. Preaching by Rev. M. May.

Chinese Josh House—Second, between Oak and Stark.
