Doctor Hartley

Sec. 32-- Map 11B

Doctor Hartley was born May 16, 1830/1 in Missouri. In 1851, he was in California, and was involved in a story on horse thieving, which was printed in the Oregon Spectator. He arrived in Oregon in 1852, and settled this claim in 1855. On October 19, 1854 he married Martha J. (--?--) in Portland. He signed for his claim with his mark (X).(1)

At the time of the 1870 census, he's called William. Besides his wife, Martha, four children are in the family: Eliza, Minerva, Henry, and Margareth.(3)
