City Directories can be very useful in tracking folks in cities. Articles about how city directories can be useful in genealogical research can be read here. City Directories for Portland were first published in the year 1862, and have continued since then. In only a few years no directories were published, most notably in the 1940s, where 1945 through 1949 saw no directories published. Portland City Directories can be found at various repositories, including Multnomah County Library, Oregon Historical Society, Genealogical Forum of Oregon, and are available on microfilm through the Family History Library System. City Directories use a number of abbreviations, and the listings here are as published. For an explanation of abbreviations, visit this page.
