Vital records from Multnomah County are extant from the time of the county's establishment. By statute, birth records are open records only after 100 years. A few Portland births were recorded before statewide registration began, and they are available at the Oregon State Archive's Website. exist beginning in 1855. Earliest divorces were granted by the state legislature. Later, records were kept by the counties. As kept by a government body began for the City of Portland in 1881.
