Emilie Todd Helm - Rebel in the White House

Emilie Todd Helm was wife of Confederate General Benjamin Hardin Helm and the sister of Mary Todd Lincoln. She had a front row view of history during and after the Civil War. This program relates protests aroused with her presence in the White House and details her life after the war in Elizabethtown, Kentucky and as the Mother of the Orphan Brigade.

Betsy Smith is an eighth-generation native of Cynthiana, Harrison County, Kentucky. She attended Georgetown College, graduating magna cum laude with degrees in American Studies (Honors), History, and Communication Arts. One of the many things she does include co-directing the Kentucky Educational Speech and Drama Association. Digging into Emilie Todd Helm’s past and bringing her to life has been a joy for her.
