    First Kentucky "Orphan" Brigade

South Carolina Campaign, April 1865

This map shows the area of central South Carolina where the Orphan Brigade fought its last actions in April 1865.  Columbia is at the left, Sumter at the right, and Camden at the top.  The Wateree River runs through the middle of the map from north to south.  The Orphan Brigade fought in this general area, protecting the railroads.  The yellow highlights show Sumter and Camden, plus the sites of the actions at:  A - Dingle's Mill (just south of Sumter, April 9), Stateburg (April 14-15), B - Swift Creek (April 18), Boykin's Mill (April 18), C - Dinkin's Mill (April 19), and Poinsett State Park, apparently the area where George Doyle was killed, and the general location of the Orphan Brigade's last action..
