Half a century ago, vandals toppled two huge stone grave monuments belonging to Colonel Isaac Moores and his family. Col. Moores, originally of Kentucky, served under Gen. Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812. He was a Regimental Commander in the 1832 Blackhawk War, and a distinguished member of the Oregon Constitutional Convention. The monuments had lain in large sections on the ground, gathering dirt and moss for the next 50 years. In September, 1999, our SAR Chapter formed a work crew, and with professional guidance from Friends of Pioneer Cemetery, we thoroughly cleaned, and then hoisted the massive granite sections of these two monuments back into place - making sure they were there to stay.
This was a huge undertaking - one monument is 14 feet high, the other 12 feet high. We completed the work on Oct. 25, 1999. Our volunteer work on this project received a professional estimate of $8,000.
On September 23rd, 2000, hundreds of folks attended a rededication ceremony of these monuments.
