DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

CHAPTER HISTORY

Tualatin Chapter was organized April 12, 1958 , with 18 members. The first regent was Mrs. Emmet Stoddard.

The majority of our members live in the Lake Oswego or surrounding area.  The name Tualatin was chosen for the chapter because of its historical importance to Oregon .  It derives from the Indian word "Tuality" or "Twality," meaning slow and restful, or peaceful, which applies to the slow moving Tualatin River and the scenic and peaceful valley through which it flows. The Tualatin District was one of the four original districts of the Oregon Country as it existed in 1843-1844.

Our chapter is very grateful to the veterans who have served, or are currently serving, in the United States military.   Members contribute toiletry items, socks, and stationery to the Portland Oregon Veteran’s Hospital.  In addition, a special collection for them is taken each December at our Christmas meeting.

We are especially proud and supportive of the DAR museums in Oregon .  These include the Robert Newell House and Pioneer Mother’s Memorial Cabin Museums located in the community of Champoeg, the Caples House Museum in Columbia City , and the Schminck Museum in Lakeview.   Members contribute to the success of these state and national treasures by participating in educational activities with local school children, fund raising events, and committee service.

Throughout our chapter's history, we have supported DAR schools with special emphasis on Kate Duncan Smith, Tamassee, and the Chemawa Indian School . The Oregon State Society DAR provides some tuition and expense reimbursement for Indian students, partly through the scholarship fund originated by the Tualatin Chapter.

Each year our chapter sponsors a worthy young person for one of the DAR scholarships.  We also actively work with local high schools to promote our Good Citizens Award.

We provide subscriptions to the national DAR magazine, "American Spirit," to three local libraries, mount displays of DAR related materials, and have completed a WWII archival project at the Lake Oswego Library for which Tualatin Chapter received a 3rd Place National NSDAR Award and recognition in the national DAR newsletter.

Tualatin Chapter celebrated our 50th Anniversary in April 2008.  Our membership continues to grow.  We are dedicated to the goals of the DAR and to honoring the service of our patriots while maintaining the warmth, friendships, and camaraderie that mark this vibrant chapter
