Left photo (click to enlarge) the indians went there to catch fish. When the dam was built, their summer camp was submerged under thirty feet of water, and the falls were no more. That was a great cultural loss to the indians that the elders still talk about today. Click to see typical wheat farm in Umatilla.
The Nez Perse pictured at the right live on the same reservation as the Umatilla and Guyuse. They were famous and we will write more about them later. |
The umatilla and other tribes close speak Sahaptin, though each has it's own dialect.
Umatilla mostly flat but borders with the blue mountains which lead up to Powder River. |
