The Oregon Trail passed through the north part of Umatilla. 

At a place known as Celilo Falls some emigrants who had money loaded to flat barges and floated down to Willamet River junction with the Columbia.

 

Left photo (click to enlarge) the indians went there to catch fish. When the dam was built, their summer camp was submerged under thirty feet of water, and the falls were no more. That was a great cultural loss to the indians that the elders still talk about today.

The Nez Perse pictured at the right live on the same reservation as the Umatilla and Guyuse. They were famous and we will write more about them later.

The umatilla and other tribes close speak Sahaptin, though each has it's own dialect.

Umatilla mostly flat but borders with the blue mountains which lead up to Powder River.
