Lincoln County Genealogical Society TOLEDO, OREGON LIBRARY GENEALOGY COLLECTIONCreated by Duane Ellis for the Lincoln County Genealogical SocietyThis is a database listing of the genealogy collection at the Toledo, Oregon Library. It was taken from the Coastal Resource Sharing Network [CRSN] on the Internet. This database list is limited to the genealogy books and materials located at the Toledo Library. The entire CRSN genealogy listing can be viewed on the Internet by going to www.beachbooks.org. Once there,
This page lists only the genealogy collection at the Toledo Library. There will also be a hard copy of this information on the library shelf for patrons to use. The purpose of this effort is to help make the collection more accessible. There are several additional lists to aid in locating a relevant source. Where To Look for Family History Information is a general listing of where to look to focus your search for individual information. For example: if you need to locate someone’s age, you would look first in census, vital records, or cemeteries. You would then search military and taxation records. The Shelf Listing by Geographical Region can help locate a specific text on the shelf by call number and color code. Each state is listed under a separate call number and each geographic region of the country has a specific round color sticker on its spine. Books about New York State are listed with a 747 call number and a blue sticker. Oregon books are listed with a 795 call number and an orange sticker. For a list of books new to the LCGS genealogical collection, click here. The genealogical resources are non-book resources. They are microfilm, microfiche, video tapes and the like. There is a list of the category abbreviations used in the CD and hard copy. The selections on the Internet list and the CD are listed alphabetically by subject area. The Internet list had many of the selections listed by the specific county once and not again under the name of the state. The official CRSN listings were followed without change. It seemed most important to be accurate to the original listing. There was an attempt on the CD to consolidate the information in one place to make it more helpful. The selections on the Toledo Genealogy List are alphabetical by subject. This is followed by the library call number needed to physically locate the book on the shelf. Next is a category field. The initials for the categories were estimated from reading the Title/description. There is a field for the dates given in the description. The last field is the Title/description of the text as listed on the CSRN. The value of using a database is that the information may be sorted or found. The list on the CD is presently sorted alphabetically by subject. The library staff had the list sorted by call number so that they could quickly and easily locate all books present. Sorting the list by category will put all similar categories together. This would be useful to locate all the texts dealing with a specific state. |
