Skinner Family Cobourg & Brantford Ontario
Brown Photo Album with silver clasp and gold design, Woodgrain pages, purchased in Niagara area. Here are most of the photos laid out - what a treat it was to look through these, sure wish they were my family. Please note that the photos in this album are not available for copies.
- 1. Man, woman and 2 children. Man has goatee type beard, woman's hair is parted in middle and crimped. Her dress has a tight jacket with many buttons close together. One child is a young boay with leggings and knickers, about 5 or 6 years old. The second child is wearing a long dress with a frilly collar. Photographer Snider, Brantford

- 5. Studio photo of two men. One is standing, he has a huge bushy mustache which hangs down almost to his shoulders. He is wearing a hat, almost a cowboy style, and a suit with flared pant legs. - 8. Young woman with almost identical hairdo as woman in photo #7. She has jewellry at her neck, and very dark long eyebrows. She has a rather large nose and ears. Photographer: Park & Co., Brantford

- 14. Studio portrait of young woman with very dark hair, parted on side. She has crimped it above her ears, and at the back is either a dark ribbon hanging down, or her hair, it is hard to tell. She is wearing a dark dress with jacket with cuffs and front section of shiny patterned material. Her skirt is similar in style to the young woman in photo #13. She has a Mona-Lisa smile, and a large face with large features. . Photographer: Pittaway & Jarvis, 117 Sparks St. Ottawa Ont. Writing on back "Barbara Skinner, 1886" I suspect this is the woman referred to in Photo 13 as "Mother" See also photo #7 of Barbara at a younger age. I think that #4 is also Barbara Skinner.
- 15. Head and shoulders portrait of man with very bushy, wide and long mustache. He is wearing a hat and suit and tie. He is dressed in similar fashion to the men in # 5 and in fact looks very much like them. His eyebrows are distinguishable by their strong upside down "V" shape. Both the men in #5 have the same shape eyebrows. His chind has a cleft. He may be a brother or even one of those men. Photographer: J. C. Walker, Brantford.

Her hair is dark and swept back but she has a fringe bang on forehead and down sides to ears. She has a bit of a recessed chin and is turned 3/4 profile to camera. The boy is in a skirt and jacket with leggings and high boots. The dark skirt has a white lace underskirt showing at bottom all the way around. Found James Skinner in the 1871 online census index for Haldimand Tp. (Northumberland Co) as age 65 born Scotland, farmer. If anyone can get the full record, it would be great to see who his wife and family were!
Types of Early Photographs
The type of photograph in an album helps to date the album
Daguerreotypes (ca 1839)
Photography in USA began circa 1839 but not many are found before 1854.
Ambrotypes (circa 1854)
The ambrotype was a glass negative backed with black material so it appeared as a positive image
Tintypes (ca 1855)
The Ferrotype process (tintypes) was introduced in the United States in 1855. It substituted an iron plate for glass and is one of a kind. No copies could be made from a tintype. |
Carte de Visite or CDVs (ca 1859)
CDV stands for carte de visite. CDVs replaced ambrotypes, producing a card 2.5 by 4" CDVs arrived in the United States around 1859, on the eve of the Civil War (1861-1865). On June 30, 1864 a tax on photographs, ambrotypes, daguerreotypes and other "sun-pictures" went into effect. Tax Revenue Stamps had to be placed on the backs of photographs from that date (1864) until August 1, 1866. This helps date CDVs taken in this time period.
Cabinet Cards (circa 1870)
CDV’s were replaced in the 1870s by Cabinet Cards which were on a larger 4 by 6" card. |
