New Hampshire Store Ledger, 1813-1815The following entries come from a store ledger, 1813-1815 of New Hampshire customers from the area of New Holderness, Bridgewater, Central Harbor, Plymouth, Meredith, Sandwich, Sanbornton, and New Hampton.The pages are inked owner ledger entries, each double (facing pages) page account is formatted with the personal name for the account, transaction date, item purchased name, price and total are written in ink on the left lined page, on the right lined page the town abbreviation or name is listed and below is written payment information for the account including: received date, barter item or medium of exchange description, note, etc., price and total taken as payment to satisfy the account
This 1813-1815 New Hampshire ledger, account at page 78 on the left page has the name of account in large writing "Enoch Rogers , N Hold (New Holden abbreviation)", dated entries for the year 1813 thought 1815 with 31 lined and dated entries of items purchased, including: 1813 July 23 To Rum $1.47; account on page 78 right page has place "CONTRA" (owner's intent to carry in this case the NHold (or New Holden) as the location of Enoch Rogers) in large letters at top of page followed by dated entries for the year 1813 thought 1815 with 14 lined entries for payment or barter of the items billed on the facing page including: 1813 August 14 by wood 3.40; both pages account, charge and payment balance out either direct or with carry over balance note; the entries of merchandise purchased on account and barter or trade used to pay for the account include; by tanning & seasoning skins, 1 pair footings, coon, butter, tea, sugar, rum, sythe, cheese, fish, nails, pepper & spice, iron shovel, indigo, brandy, rakes, tobacco, boys hat, toating (spelling?), oats, ashes, cotton, book, file steel, rags, cloth, yarn, bushel corn, pork, tallow, chemise, hoe, slat, snuff, iron, wool, wheat, plates, bottle, molasses, looking glass, by horse, labor, callico, oats and chicken, w bu rye, ribbon, whiskey, steel, vinegar, to this note, (by hors 7"75(18) by J Shins , by hours 2.14 (15 horse 2.84), combs, ½ doz bowls, sheep skin & horse skin, gill rum, mug, powder, shaft, toybook, geography, hankerchief, by horse, sleigh to Hasowish, by flax, powder & wine, lath, sugar, 3 doz books, paper, foolscrap paper, wrapping, 3 hymn books, 5 reams wrapping papers, watch, goose, deer, hat, by going to Holdway, by 28 weeks labor, veal, by horse to Sanbornton, by house, by 1 L skin, felt hat, wheels, cucumbers, lamb, pig, his work from April 18th 1814 up to this day ( Nov 24 1814), candlesticks, 34 ½ weeks labor at 22/6, patent wheelhead, biscuit, chalk, clover seed, a frame, by chopping ice, beeswax, sleigh to Sam---ton (spelling), oxen ½ day, 32 eggs, pins, by hay, by 1 days work, casimere, pork & potatoes, cider barrels, horse to Pembroke, etc; account names include: Amos Leabitt (N Hampton); account at double page numbered 230 is titled "HOUSE, Holderness" and both left and right page list 1814 dated purchase entries with no payment section; back side blank rear end page and facing inside rear end page are dated 1814-1815 listing of David Smith work schedule ("May 5th by himself and horse") entries, bottom margin edge of the page has small inked "POLLY AMES JULY 4TH" signature Submitter: James Holden |
