2005 Avondale Mine Disaster

Honoring the 110 miners (including immigrants newly arrived from Wales)
Sept. 10, 2005 at the Site of the Avondale Mine Disaster, Plymouth Twp., Luzerne Co., PA
TIME: 11 AM to 1 PM (on the Avondale Colliery Grounds located in Plymouth Township)
1 PM to 4 PM (Light Refreshments, Drinks, & Mixer at the Plymouth Township Rec Park)

Sept. 11, 2005 at the Washburn St. Cem., Scranton's Hyde Park Section, Lackawanna Co., PA
TIME: 1 PM to 3 PM (in Washburn Cem.; Light refreshments will be served after the program)

DIRECTIONS TO THE AVONDALE MINE DISASTER SITE:
From Plymouth and areas N, take State Route 11S past Syl's Auto and turn left into the Plymouth Twp. Rec Park (the soccer/baseball fields and service buildings are clearly visible). Park here. It's a 10 minute walk to the site N along the railroad grade or a shuttle will provide access to the site for those individuals in need. Too many vehicles on the RR is prohibited for safety reasons and Liability concerns.
From I-81N or S, take the Nanticoke Exit 168 (South Cross Valley Expressway/State Route 29) across the Susquehanna River, join Route 11S, turn right at the stop sign and drive ~ 2/10 of a mile to the entrance of the Rec Park.
From West Nanticoke, Berwick, and areas S, take Route 11 N, continue through West Nanticoke beyond the stop light at the bridge until you come to a stop sign about .2 of a mile, bear left, just before turning right back onto State Route 29S, proceed through the stop sign, and turn right into the
Rec Park after about .1 of a mile.
DIRECTIONS TO THE WASHBURN ST. CEMETERY:
From Route 11, Plymouth Township, drive to the South Cross Valley/State Route 29S, cross back over the Susquehanna River and enter the I-81N on-ramp. Continue approximately 9 miles N to Exit 180 (Route 11/Birney Ave.). Continue N on Route 11 for about 4 miles and turn left onto Elm St. Continue on Elm St. for about .5 mile which becomes 4th Avenue for .2 mile. Turn left onto Luzerne
St. for .6 mile, then right onto S. Main Ave. for .2 mile, then left onto Washburn St. for .6 mile until you reach the Cemetery Gate.
