An
1865 List Of Those Who Paid Income Tax In Beaver County
This list appeared in the Beaver Argus issues of Jan. 25 and Feb. 1,
1865 and was prefaced by the following editorial: "We begin this week the
publication of the Special Income Tax List of Beaver County, and will conclude
it next week. We have been surprised, in looking over the list, to find
that many of the reputed wealthy, and many who boast of being wealthy are
among the smallest tax-payers. It will be a matter of surprise to many
of our readers to find how few there are in the county whose income reaches
one thousand dollars per annum, and yet to know how many spend double that
amount every year upon themselves and fami1ies. Taking their returns as
a basis, we may safely conclude that many who have been looked upon as
wealthy and reliable, are on the road to ruin. Those who return such small
incomes, and yet 1ive so extravagantly, are not safe customers. Merchants
and money-lenders take whiling in time. There is one of two things true,
either that many have heretofore falsly represented themselves wealthy,
and accumulating rapidly, or else they have defrauded the Government and
perjured themselves in their returns. We may refer to this again, and we
ask honest men to examine the list published and report known cases of
fraud."
