EXPLANATIONS
It was common for someone to live in one of these townships but to get their mail from a post office outside that township, so you see people getting their mail from Columbia or Mountville while they lived in Manor Township, we can assume that they lived in the part of Manor Township near Mountville or Columbia.
In the case of Washington Borough there are references to street names, we don't see this in the other locations. A reference to Lancaster in the Washington Boro directory means the person lived on Lancaster Ave or Road, not that they lived in the city of Lancasater.
The abbreviation "do" is used frequently, it is an abbreviation for ditto which means the same as the above. Another common abreviation, at least in Washington Borough, is "h." this stands for home so you may see somthing like Lancaster h. do, which means both the business and his home were on Lancaster Avenue. Another abbreviation is "col'd" for colored or African American.
