Roster of 84th Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry,

Company G

Recruited in Cameron County in April of 1861

The following list has been edited to reflect the names of the fifty-one (51) soldiers recruited from Cameron County, mostly by Judge MERRICK HOUSLER, of Shippen (Emporium). This information was transcribed from the original muster rolls and descriptive rolls of Company "G", Eighty-fourth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, 1861-1865. The original documents can be found at the National Archives in Washington, DC.

There were a total of 81 original members in this company - The remaining thirty (30) were largely from Clearfield, Elk and Huntingdon Counties and are excluded here. Most of the men were NOT born in Cameron County, which clearly reflects the wilderness nature of the region at the time of the Civil War. With the coming of the railroad however, the area opened up to development, and I believe most of the individuals who list their occupation as laborer, were probably associated with the lumber industry in one manner or another.

The company did not fare well during its first campaigns. Largely due to inefficient officers, this company literally desinigrates within one year. Though several were killed or wounded, many received discharges on medical grounds, and by the autumn of 1862 it is largely replaced with a "new" company recruited largely from Cumberland County, PA.

Nevertheless, a small core of "Old" Company "G" remained through the rest of the war, and the following soldiers WERE discharged at the end of their term of service, three years later:

Jacob Barr, Austin Bliss, Nelson Cutler, F. Nickerbocker, Chester Norrigan, William Pickering, Christopher Smith, and Henry Stricklen.
