Bernard S. McDermott is among the well liked and successful business men of Expedit, where he is proprietor of the McDermott Hotel. He was born at Osceola Mills, Clearfield County, Pa., July 6, 1891, and is the son of Patrick and Alice (O'Farrell) McDermott.
Patrick McDermott was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1860. He came to this country in 1881 and settled at Osceola Mills, where he worked in the mines. Before coming to this country Mr. McDermott served in India for six years with the British army. He died Dec. 9, 1918, and is buried in Holy Name Cemetery, Ebensburg. Mr. McDermott was a Republican, a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Loyal Order of Moose and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. His widow resides at Cleveland, Ohio. She was born in Scotland in May, 1851, and in 1877 emigrated to the United States with her brother and settled at Osceola Mills, Pa. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. McDermott: Catherine, deceased; John, lives at Nanty Glo; Bernard F., the subject of this sketch; Thomas, lives at Nanty Glo; Alice, married J. J. O'Rourke, lives at Cleveland, Ohio; Patrick, lives at Cleveland; and Nora, married Joseph Piatka, lives at Cleveland.
Bernard F. McDermott received his education in the schools
of Osceola Mills and after his graduation from high school learned
the machinist's trade with the Westinghouse Electric Company,
with whom he was employed for three years. He then removed to
Homestead, Pa., and in 1918 came to Nanty Glo, where he was associated
with martin McDermott and E. C. Davis, the firm being known as
Davis and McDermott Coal Company. In 1919 Mr. McDermott purchased
the Home Hotel in partnership with his uncle, Martin McDermott.
The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1921 and two years later they
established a billiard room in Nanty Glo. Mr. McDermott disposed
of this in March, 1925, and removed to Expedit, where he purchased
the Shoemaker Hotel, which is now known as the McDermott Hotel.
On May 1, 1916, Mr. McDermott was married to Miss Anna Doyle, the daughter of peter and Catherine (Flanigan) Doyle, natives of Lancashire, England, who came to this country in 1891 and settled at Hawk Run, Pa. Both Mr. and Mrs. Doyle are deceased. Three children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. McDermott: Bernard, born May 9, 1917; Joseph, born Aug. 1, 1918; and Mary, born Sept.1, 1922, died Nov. 3, 1923.
Mr. McDermott is a member of St. Charles Catholic Church, Knights of St. George, Ancient Order of Hibernians, and Loyal Order of Moose. He is a Republican.
