Index to Nanty Glo Journal Obituaries Introduction
This is an index to obituaries and death notices published in The Journal, formerly known as the Nanty-Glo Journal. The Journal began publishing in May 1921 and is part of the Mainline Newspapers group, which is a subsidiary of Latrobe Printing and Publishing Co. The Mainline Newspapers include The Dispatch (Portage), The Journal (Nanty Glo), The Mainliner (Cresson), The Mountaineer Herald (Ebensburg), and The Star-Courier (Patton). Justin Eger is Editor of the Mainline Newspapers and Allison Garver is the Staff Writer for the Journal. Published every Thursday, The Journal news focuses on the villages of Nanty Glo, Belsano, Mundys Corner, Mineral Point, Twin Rocks, Vintondale, and Vinco in Cambria County, PA. The newspaper's address is: The Journal, P.O. Box 777, Ebensburg PA 15931-0777, telephone (814) 472-4110. A set of all issues of The Journal, through about 2008, is available on microfilm at the Nanty Glo Public Library, courtesy of The Journal.
The Mainline Newspapers have a limited presence on the Internet at http://www.mainline-news.com.
In the earliest editions, obituaries and death notices were frequently published on the front page with some included on inside pages -- included in the Twin Rocks, Belsano, Jackson Twp., etc., news columns. The "Obituary Section", which groups all obits in one location started in 1990's. Beginning with the June 14, 2000 issue, The Journal began publishing a "Death Notice" column, which provided a listing of deaths for which complete obituaries were not received from funeral directors. In the December 20, 2000 issue the "Death Notice column became the "District Deaths" column. The obituary index includes the names of individuals from news stories on the front page who may have been prominent citizens or died in tragedies such as auto accidents, fires, murders, etc.
The Journal obituaries have been published "5-way" since January 2003. The same obits are found in the The Dispatch, The Journal, The Mainliner, The Mountaineer Herald, and The Star-Courier. Prior to January 2003 the obits were 4-way, appearing in The Dispatch, The Journal, The Mainliner, and The News Leader. The Star-Courier was the Union Press Courier prior to 2000.
This index was compiled using the format of the Obituary Daily Times (ODT); an online database containing the index to obits collected by the Obituary Daily Times (ODT) volunteers. I have been indexing The Journal and the Tribune-Democrat (Johnstown, PA) since October 1998. As of June 7, 2015, the Obituary Daily Times database contained 17,411,124 entries. Access to and searching of this database is free to anyone who has access to the Internet. The location is: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~obituary/
A special "Thank You" to Donna Davis and Barbara Hakanen of the Nanty Glo Tri Area Museum and Historical Society (NGTAMHS) and Kim Regitz for their assistance. Donna transcribed about 27 years of the earliest publication years, Kim transcribed about 15 years of the 1950s and 1960s, and Barb worked on several years and helped fill in some of the gaps I had in my more recent transcriptions. On May 10, 2003 the transcription of all previous editions of the Journal was completed. Without their help and support this project would certainly have taken several years to complete. Scanning the newspapers for death notices was a tedious task and it likely that some deaths were missed. On average, approximately 6-8 hours were spent on the preparation of each year which included reviewing the newspapers, compiling a transcription, entering the data into a computer database file and merging the data into a composite database.
This index, and much more information about the history of Blacklick Township, Cambria County, is also available on the Internet from the Blacklick Township History and Genealogy Web Site at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~pacblack. This index is a work in progress and annual updates will be published on my web site.
Copies of obits or death notices may be printed from the Journal microfilms located at the Nanty Glo Library, at a cost of 25 cents per copy. In the past several volunteers of the NGTAM&HS have offered to locate and provide copies of the obits contained in this index. If you would like a copy of a particular obit, follow the directions below:
