Eagle Iron Works at Curtin

In the pursuit of our family histories, the question inevitably arises as to what our ancestors did for a living. To the contemporary visitor of Centre County in the fall, it is best to dispense yourself of the notion that all folks here do is watch football, that is Penn State football. In an era long before the school was founded, the county was ripe for agricultural pursuits, and in time a development of other natural resources such as coal and iron.

  • Occupations in 1860 - A ranking of the Top 20 occupations as listed in the 1860 U.S. Census for Centre County
  • Iron Industry - In major thanks to the Centre County Historical Society, we are providing a link to this resource which includes information on iron making, iron furnace workers, and more.
  • Where People Work in 2000 - For comparative value, we have put up a link to a list of the top 20 employers in Centre County in 2000.
