Between 1813 and 1989, approximately 135 funeral directors and/or homes had operated in Centre County, beginning with Samuel Harris in Bellefonte after the War of 1812. Westgard, published by the Centre County Genealogical Society, 1990. Currently, ten funeral homes are in operation within the boundaries of Centre County, along with a number of others serving the area, though located outside the county. In addition to several of these funeral homes now having websites, a few of them also have online obituaries - both current and archived.
Funeral home records can often provide helpful genealogical information. Records of two funeral homes have been published and are available to use on premises at the Pennsylvania Room of the Centre County Library and Historical Museum in Bellefonte.
