In April, 1852, the Directors of the Charlestown School Board met to consider the erection of a new school house for the colored children in the upper end of the township.

On February 28, 1857, school board members, John McCurdy and Benjamin Rapp were appointed to purchase ground for the  erection of a new school house for the colored children of the township.

The school board agreed to received bids for the building of the above mentioned school house.  The following bids were received:
$365; Isiah F. Snyder
$365; John Moses
$349; William Walker

William Walker was awarded the contract for the building of the school house for the colored children.  The work was to be done in a substantial and workman-like manner, subject to the  inspection of the school board's directors.

On November 14, 1857, the School Board Directors for Charlestown Township, inspected and accepted the new school house from William Walker.

At a school board meeting in March, 1858, the directors agreed to enter into contract with the East Whiteland School Board to allow them to send their colored children to the Longwood School House, at the rate of .04 per day.

A flag and pole were presented to the Longwood School by the Pride of Pickering Council on 18 March 1895.  Also in 1895, a 94-1/2 foot deep well was dug.

In 1901, the Longwood School House was closed down.  Students from this school were then transported to Hopewell School House by Morris Holman, for $30 per month.  On June 1, 1902 the Longwood School House and property was sold for $2000.

The remains of this school house can still be seen; they are located at the intersection of Bodine Road and Valley Hill Road.
