Teachers | Newspaper Clippings

Amity School House (aka- School House #2) appears in the minutes of the Charlestown School District as early as c1842, when Ezekiel Auld is listed as being a teacher here.  It may have been originally constructed prior to the Fall of 1839, when the public school system was begun.  It was located off of Charlestown Road, near the Charlestown Presbyterian Church.

In March, 1868, the school directors wanted to purchase a lot of ground for the erection of a new school house at Amity's.  Unfortunately, they were not able to reach an agreement regarding the land, with Richard Nyce.  Eventually the ground was taken by condemnation proceedings.  A jury awarded Richard Nyce, property owner, $136 for damages.

On February 22, 1869, a contract to build the new school house at Amity was awarded to Robert Hughes, for the amount of $1,750.

On December 20, 1869 the School Directors accepted the newly built school house at Amity from the contractor.

According to the minutes of the Charlestown School Board, in the Winter/Spring 1871, there were 63 students enrolled here.  And in c1874, Amity had 61 students enrolled in their school.

In 1873, the School board approved the plantings of Maples trees on the school grounds.

Around the year of 1875, Amity School House received Slates, which were removed from the upper room of Little's School House.

In 1893, a new well was dug at Amity.  On Thanksgiving, a flag was presented to the Amity School House by the Pride of Pickering Council.

In April, 1925, construction of the Charlestown Consolidated School had begun.  By November, the township's children were being taught in the newly constructed school.  In 1926, the Amity School House was sold for $1000.
