CHARLESTOWN TOWNSHIP
LITTLE'S SCHOOL HOUSE, #3

HOME | BACK

Teachers | Newspaper Clippings

On July 20, 1839, the directors of the Charlestown School Board met and accepted a bid from William Little, as contractor, to build a new school house at Little's, for $400.  The building was to be the same size and plan as the new school at Fetters (Hopewell).  It was to be built near the old school house.  That statement would imply that the original Little's School House was more than likely, first built as a "pay" (tuition) school.

In August, 1841, Major Little executed a deed for 1/4 acre of ground on which the newly built school house was erected in 1839.

On November 1, 1870, the School Board purchases 3/4 acre of ground from Major Little, for $127.50.  A contract for the construction of the new school house at Little's, was awarded to Jesse B. K. Young, on 6 February 1871, in the amount of $2,773.

The new school house was accepted by the directors from the contractor.  The upper room of this building was to be used as a voting place for the residents of Charlestown township and was also to be used by the Charlestown Horse Company for meetings.

In 1873, the School Board approved the planting of maple trees on all school house properties.

Slates from the upper room of Little's School House were removed and placed at Amity School House in 1875.

Sadly, in December 1884 and January 1885, three students from Little's, the children of Joseph Ritchie, were stricken with diptheria.  One child died at 1 am and another at 4 am on Christmas morning.  A third child died on the 12th day of the new year.  They reportedly attended school for the last time on December 12, 1884.

Alexander McConaghy is given the lumber from the "old" school house at Little's in exchange for tearing down and removing the building in 1888.

By November, 1925, Little's School House was no longer in use--the newly constructed, Charlestown Consolidated School had opened and all classes were being taught there.
In December, 1927, Little's School House was sold at a public sale and was purchased for $1,500.
